The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) awarded Rockwell Collins a three-year contract worth up to $3.1 million to develop a new transmitter that will reduce the size, weight, power and cost of software-defined radios. The Rockwell Collins method uses “diverse accessible heterogeneous integration foundry technology” to “prevent unwanted harmonics from occurring in the first place.” This would eliminate the need for heavier and larger transmitters with filtering to prevent the unwanted signals, thus making it possible to shrink the devices.
Jetex Flight Support, in collaboration with Honeywell, launched the MyJETEX iOS app, which allows operators to plan and manage their worldwide trips. Features include flight planning, aircraft datalink, flight following and international trip support services. The collaboration on the new app follows an agreement signed at EBACE whereby Jetex is offering Honeywell’s Global Data Center (GDC) flight support services to its clients in Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific.
Rockwell Collins introduced Airshow 500, which it claims is the first “3-D moving map system” for light business jets. The new system is a modernized, lighter weight drop-in replacement for the Airshow 410. It provides on-aircraft control of a wide variety of options and is compatible with legacy monitors as well as newer widescreen monitors with digital inputs. Airshow 500 is also available in a flange-mount option to meet any aircraft installation requirement. It is compatible with the Rockwell Collins Airshow interactive app for the iPad.

Headset maker Lightspeed Aviation (Booth No. C11137) is offering a new aviation headset with a suite of options that offer a “personal flying experience” the company abbreviates as “PFX.” The options include “acoustic response mapping” and “streaming quiet.”
“Acoustic response mapping” uses sound waves and advanced signal processing to measure the user’s ear size and shape, adapting audio to each pilot’s “unique auditory landscape.”
Heads Up Technologies (Booth No. 1421) has signed a content distribution agreement with Red Touch Media to provide access to an extensive library of digital content through Heads Up’s fiber-optic-based Lumin cabin management system and wireless media server.
Rockwell Collins (Booth No. 9806) announced at NBAA 2013 enhancements to its Ascend Flight Manager app for the iPad that enables performance-based fight planning and dynamic flight tracking for Regional Trip Support subscribers. The Ascend Flight Manager app is now available at the Apple App Store.
Twin Commander Aircraft (Booth No. C9432) announced that authorized service center Eagle Creek Aviation Services of Indianapolis has completed a third Grand Renaissance Commander for the Colombian Army. The 690B had sat idle for three years before being ferried to Eagle Creek for the 10-month modification and refurbishment.
Honeywell has further improved its Ovation Select cabin management system with a new feature that allows multiple entertainment and cabin comfort features to be controlled from a Samsung smartphone. The system can already be operated using an iPhone, iPad or other tablet devices. The control units allow flight attendants or passengers to scroll easily through moving map display options or to change cabin lighting and temperature settings. Honeywell is highlighting upgrades available to its satcom products, flight management systems (FMS), cabin management systems (CMS) and cockpit displays at this year’s NBAA show.
The company has developed a modification that allows an operator with the “C” series Ovation Select CMS to upgrade the system to full HD video and audio, onboard music, Blu-ray and PlayStation capability. The modification will be offered through the Honeywell dealer network via a supplemental type certificate.
