Aluminum specialist Constellium’s new foundry in Issoire, France, is up and running–a key step in a strategy aimed at regaining some of the ground lost to composite materials in aircraft construction. The casting house focuses on a new family of alloys, dubbed Airware, which are lighter than the previous generation made of aluminum-lithium.
Smac Aero, a Toulon, France-based company specializing in elastomers for soundproofing and vibration dampening, is here at the Paris Air Show (Hall 2B Stand C140-158) exhibiting Smacpreg, a combination of pre-impregnated (prepreg) carbon fibers with a layer of rubber. As CEO Philippe Robert emphasized during a visit to the company’s development and production facilities, the new product is suited to fiber placement robots.
Imet Alloys (U.S. Pavilion, Hall 3, AB110), a first-time exhibitor at the Paris Air Show, which describes itself as “an ambitious global company specializing in the control and management of superalloy and titanium from the aviation industry.” Founded by CEO Ruaraidh Williamson in 2011 and headquartered in Monroe, North Carolina, Imet Alloys helps companies control their superalloy and titanium scrap, known in the industry as “revert.”
The FAA-approved Boeing service bulletin for the 787 calls for modification of the charger and battery monitoring unit to narrow the acceptable level of charge. In essence, this means lowering the maximum charge allowed and raising the minimum level of discharge allowed. In other words, it cuts the performance gain the lithium-ion technology is supposed to bring.

The FAA is cautioning cabin and cockpit crewmembers to guard against passengers attempting to bring personal oxygen bottles on board an aircraft. Contained O2 is considered a hazardous material both as a non-flammable gas and an oxidizer.
Part 121 and 135 regulations do allow air carriers to provide passengers with onboard compressed oxygen for personal use, provided they follow guidelines in their FAA-approved aircraft maintenance manual. However, these carriers are not allowed to permit passengers to bring their own oxygen tanks aboard.

StandardAero’s large transport-category bizliner completions center, Associated Air Center in Dallas has received the state of Texas’ highest award for environmental achievement: the Texas Environmental Excellence Award. AAC received the award for its sustainability initiatives and continuous improvement projects in the reduction and/or elimination of products and processes that use hexavalent chromium as well as the use of LED (light-emitting diode) task lighting within aircraft projects.
Beringer Wheels & Brakes is offering a corrosion-resistant two-piece nosewheel for the DHC-6 Twin Otter. Designed using 3-D FEM software, it is said to stand up to severe use, including wet environments, by sealing the bearings to keep water out. “This alloy wheel is stronger and much less brittle [than the original],” said president Gilbert Beringer.
