This year’s show benefits from recent improvements to infrastructure and facilities as organizer Farnborough International continues a 60-year evolution of development begun by the Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC). One of the first examples was a re-landscaping of the exhibition site in 1980 to accommodate continuing growth.
Private Nigerian operator Arik Air confirmed here it is a previously unidentified customer for seven Boeing 737-800s that will bring its fleet to 17 aircraft, of which three will be longer -900 variants. Arik Air also has on order five Boeing 777-300ERs and seven 787-9s (for which deliveries are being renegotiated to a
later date than the previously agreed 2013).
Rolls-Royce and British Airways are embarking on a study to identify practical alternatives to jet fuel that would make real reductions to aircraft carbon footprints. The companies will initiate a joint tender process, inviting suppliers to offer alternative fuel samples for testing on a Rolls-Royce RB211 from a British Airways Boeing 747.
With the attachment of its wings and the hanging of the engines last month, Boeing’s first P-8A Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft is right on schedule and could soon be earning its first international order, according to the manufacturer.
The success of Rolls-Royce’s flight test program for the Boeing 787’s Trent 1000 engine has led it to consider retaining the Boeing 747 it acquired for the tests and using it as a flying test bed for future programs. These programs include the new RB212 turbofan Rolls-Royce is developing for the Dassault Falcon super mid-size business jet.
Boeing has completed the power-on sequence for the first 787 Dreamliner, the company announced today. The process began early this month with a series of pre-test continuity checks to verify proper wiring connections. Upon completion of those checks, the Boeing team plugged in an external power cart and slowly began to bring full power into each segment of the system, beginning with the flight deck displays.
Qatar Airways is planning to use its new Airbus Corporate Jetliner (ACJ) to replace a pair of Falcon 900s used by the government and ruling family. It will also be operated on European summer-season VIP scheduled service to destinations such as London; Geneva; and Nice, France; as well as for charter or wet-lease operations in the winter.
Jet Aviation inaugurated a new hangar at its Basel completion facility on May 16, just days before the opening of EBACE. Capable of simultaneously accommodating an A380 and a B747, the facility covers more than 100,000 square feet. Another 100,000 square feet of office and shop space is to be added in the near future. The event was attended by 500 customers, suppliers, members of local authorities and the press.
Airbus recently passed the 100 sales mark with its Airbus Corporate Jetliner (ACJ) family and is now achieving breakthrough sales with its new larger VIP transports. The European airframer also has sold its first double-decked A380 “Flying Palace” and clinched a second commitment for the A350XWB Prestige, based on the A350XWB-900 airliner.
This year’s Aircraft Interiors Expo is history, and indications are that the show has weathered its initial growing pains. In Hamburg, Germany, for the first time, 241 show exhibitors welcomed more than 4,000 visitors to the new venue at the Hamburg Messe convention center from April 8 to 11.
