Completion of certification testing of improved General Electric GEnx-1B engines aimed at meeting Boeing fuel-consumption specifications for the 787 has slipped to “early next year” from the previous fourth-quarter 2012 target. By November 29, some 40 GEnx-1B engines in operation had recorded 33,000 hours and 6,700 cycles, during which they performed better than expected, reported the manufacturer.
Cabin completions provider Lufthansa Technik is in the final stages of preparation for the arrival of a second Boeing 747-8 for outfitting at its facilities in Hamburg, Germany.
The airplane, destined for an undisclosed client, is expected to arrive before the end of the month. The first 747-8 is already in the cabin completion process following its arrival in August. Arrival of the second will bring to three the total number of twin-aisle bizliner projects being completed simultaneously.
Lufthansa Technik is preparing to receive a second Boeing 747-8 for VIP conversion by the company’s completions facility in Hamburg, Germany. Those preparations include an intensive engineering planning phase, qualification programs and modifications to the hangar space to accommodate the aircraft. The first 747-8 arrived at the end of August and is now into its completion program. The second aircraft is scheduled to arrive later this month, following contract signature at the Dubai Air Show last year. Both of these 747-8s are due to be delivered to their customers in 2014.
L-3 Integrated Systems has welcomed the first of two Boeing 747-8s to its Waco, Texas facilities for installation of an executive interior for an unidentified head of state.
The work will include detailed exterior paint in the customer’s livery as well as interior modifications to accommodate the interior plan. According to executive v-p Nick Farah, the L-3 design and engineering team began work on the initial 747-8 program in 2011 and delivery is expected in the summer of 2014.
Cabin humidification specialist CTT Systems is hoping to get its Cair equipment adopted for use in more business aircraft. To date, the Swedish company has mainly had success in getting Cair installed on Boeing Business Jet and Airbus Corporate Jet bizliners, but it has recently been approached by airframers, including Bombardier, about possible applications on more mainstream models.
The FAA has extended for a second year an operational evaluation of pilot initiated climbs and descents using in-trail procedures (ITP) in Pacific Ocean airspace. The trial involves 12 United Airlines Boeing 747-400s flying between the U.S. West Coast and Australia and New Zealand. Having extended the evaluation to Aug. 15, 2013, the agency said that it is also holding “exploratory conversations” with ANA and Japan Airlines to include some of their aircraft in the process.

A Southern Air Boeing 747-200 suffered the loss of all four engine-driven electrical generators while en route from Miami to Anchorage, Alaska, on September 12. The Boeing landed on Anchorage’s Runway 7 Left using the aircraft’s two emergency generators.
