As Airbus prepared to parade the A380 in Dubai, Boeing finally launched the Advanced 747 as a serious competitor. At a hastily called low-key unveiling in London last Tuesday, Alan Mulally, the president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, announced orders for 18 B747-8 Freighters worth $5 billion from Cargolux and Nippon Cargo Airlines (NCA). Orders for the new passenger version will follow next year, he confidently predicted.

Boeing says it can squeeze another 600 nm of range out of the new 777-200LR by adding three fuel tanks, giving the world’s longest-range commercial airliner the ability to fly in revenue service as far as 10,000 nm.
Avio-Diepen (Stand A1236) has joined Boeing’s integrated materials management program under which the airframe manufacturer and certain partners hold an inventory of maintenance supplies, including spare parts, that are provided as needed by an airline. The 60-year-old Dutch company is a leading commercial aerospace distributor offering individual supply programs, kit packages and related services.
Boeing will deliver the first 777-200LR prototype tomorrow to Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), Boeing vice president of product development Dan Mooney confirmed here yesterday. Three weeks ago the world’s longest-range airliner received U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and European Air Safety Administration approval after two flight test airplanes completed 886 flight hours on 328 flights, and 318 ground test hours.
Boeing believes that its latest 747 iteration–the 747-8F–could become the freighter of choice among cargo airlines. This assertion by commercial airplanes division president Alan Mulally is not surprising, given that the launch orders for 10 and six aircraft respectively from Cargolux and Nippon Cargo have now been backed by a Heads of Agreement for 10 aircraft from Emirates.
To the question of when Boeing will replace its 737 dynasty, the company remains tight-lipped. But there appears to be no question that Boeing will introduce a new-generation narrowbody airliner and it has suggested that it will likely enter service by the middle of the next decade.
Boeing Business Jets celebrated its 10th anniversary yesterday with cake, champagne and good news. Company president Steven Hill said, “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate ten years of success in the VIP market than with a new family member.”
Boeing has taken the first orders for executive versions of its new 787 Dreamliner and the next-generation 747-8 Intercontinental. According to the OEM, two 787s are listed as sold through Boeing Business Jets. A source at Boeing Business Jets confirmed the 787 orders but declined to provide additional details. Selection of an independent completion center to do the interior has yet to be made.
Boeing Business Jets marked its 10th anniversary yesterday with a pair of single-aircraft orders for its now officially launched BBJ3, the latest member of its family of executive transports derived from the new Next Generation 737. Boeing did not reveal the identity of the customers.
As Boeing Business Jets closes in on the sale of its 100th BBJ, the company is also deep into computer concepts of an executive/VIP variant of the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
Boeing Business Jets is a joint venture between Boeing and General Electric and, as suggested by the name, is responsible for all business jet configurations of Boeing airliners, from the 737 through the new 787.
