A J Walter Aviation is to buy the component repair business of Aveos Fleet Performance. AJW plans to develop an MRO operation and will establish Aveos’s Montreal facility as its new global aircraft components maintenance headquarters. The acquisition is part of a larger expansion program that has included establishing offices in Miami, Dubai and Singapore; additional spares hubs across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas; and the launch of a new engine division. A UK global headquarters and logistics center will open later this year.
Garmin unveiled a pair of ADS-B units and a new solid-state weather radar system yesterday, further broadening its avionics product line.
The company’s new GDL 88 is a dual-link ADS-B solution, which transmits and receives on 978 MHz and also receives on 1090 MHz. Its ability to receive on both 978 and 1090 MHz means that it can detect traffic transmitting on either ADS-B OUT frequency and receive subscription-free weather data on 978 MHz. ADS-B OUT capability for flying above 18,000 feet or outside the U.S. could be added with a GTX 330/33 ES transponder.
Not many people in defense circles have heard of the Tecnam P2006T light twin, but two of these Italian-built aircraft were on display at Farnborough International to highlight the type’s suitability to perform a range of surveillance and maritime patrol duties at a low cost.
PPG Industries’ aerospace transparencies group yesterday was tapped by Cessna Aircraft to supply the cockpit windows for the new Citation Latitude. The heated windshield and side cockpit window for the super-midsize jet will be made of PPG’s chemically strengthened Herculite II glass, which is lightweight but can still resist impact by a four-pound bird at 305 knots.
Columbia Avionics & Aircraft Services obtained FAA STC approval to install Garmin GTN 650 and 750 navcoms in the Cessna 500, 501, 550, 551, S550 and 560. This follows a similar STC that the Columbia, Mo.-based company received in May for the Cessna 650. The touchscreen Garmin GTN navcoms are certified for full autopilot-coupled Waas LPV approaches, including vertical guidance. The STC also covers various combinations of the GTN 650/750, Garmin GTX-33ES mode-S transponders, Garmin GDL-69/A weather data link and a marker beacon receiver.
AgustaWestland signed three key supplier agreements for its AW609 civil tiltrotor program here at Farnborough yesterday, with Pratt & Whitney Canada, Rockwell Collins and BAE Systems. These major agreements follow a trail of contracts signed with AW609 component suppliers since AgustaWestland acquired the tiltrotor program last November. FAA and EASA certification of the AW609 is projected to occur in the first half of 2016.
Telephonics Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Griffon Corp., has delivered its first production AN/APS-508, an advanced multi-mode imaging radar system (IRS), to the Canadian Department of National Defense (CDND) for installation on the CP140 Aurora long-range maritime patrol and surveillance aircraft.
Esterline CMC Electronics has something new to show Farnborough International Airshow visitors, a touchscreen display that is part of CMC’s new Cockpit 4000 Next Gen, a technology demonstrator for future military training and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance attack aircraft.
The 2012 Farnborough International airshow will fly in the face of still-tough business conditions, according to organizers of the biennial event, to be staged in the UK from July 9 to 15. “The last two years have seen a very difficult economic environment, but 2012 is looking like it will be a really great show,” said Farnborough International chief executive Shaun Ormrod.
The FAA has issued an airworthiness directive for all Honeywell ALF502L-2C; ALF502R-3; ALF502R-3A; ALF502R-5; LF507-1F; and LF507-1H turbofans. The AD was prompted by two reports of engines experiencing uncontained release of low-pressure (LP) turbine blades. The AD requires operational checks of the engine overspeed trip system to prevent LP turbine overspeed, which could lead to uncontained release of the LP turbine blades and damage to the airplane.
