Safety and compliance company Baldwin Aviation is rolling out the latest version of its Savvy safety management software to European operators at EBACE 2013. To expand marketing efforts in Europe and the Middle East, Baldwin Aviation (Booth 1743) has hired a new European representative, Basel, Switzerland-based Margriet Bredewold.
It’s wrong to label safety a priority, according to Merlin Preuss, vice president of government and legislative affairs for the Canadian Business Aviation Association. “That’s because it’s much too easy to change priorities as the world evolves,” he told last month’s Business Aviation Safety Seminar in Montreal (BASS).
The U.S. Air Force awarded Raytheon a $50.6 million engineering and manufacturing development contract to build mobile ATC systems capable of providing approach control guidance to military and other aircraft operating within a terminal airspace area. Raytheon will supply 19 mobile systems under the service’s deployable radar approach control (D-Rapcon) program; the overall contract value is approximately $400 million.
Jupiter Avionics introduced its wi-Jac wireless headset/intercom adapter at the AEA show. The $995 wi-Jac system consists of two adapters, one that plugs into the aircraft’s headset jack and another that the headset plugs into. No installation is required, and the wi-Jac system not only eliminates tangled wires in the cockpit but also allows crewmembers to exit the aircraft and remain in communication with each other, instead of unplugging the headset and using a handheld radio.
Eurocopter unveiled an upgraded version of its EC135 helicopter yesterday at Heli-Expo in Las Vegas. The new light twin-engine EC135T3/P3 offers several improvements over the current EC135T2i/P2i, including optimized Fadec software, longer rotor blades and a change in the location of the air intake.
Argus’s Professional Resources In System Management (Prism) division is now offering safety management system (SMS) packages at special pricing for helicopter operators. According to Prism, its new “affordable” pricing for small operators of one or two aircraft “makes a functional SMS even more accessible to the entire helicopter industry.” The Prism essential and professional subscription packages provide a “comprehensive” set of tools to assist aviation companies as they implement and manage an effective SMS program, Argus said.
A new high-tech voice communication control system recently approved by the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority has been installed in the ATC center at London Biggin Hill Airport. Created by Netherlands-based Micro Electronics Products, the quarter-million-dollar system known as TCP990 includes a central electronic processor in the control tower that integrates and processes all inputs from UHF and VHF channels, personnel and emergency radio units as well as a slate of pre-selected contacts at each controller position and on the ATC assistant desk.
Sensor Systems (Booth No. 1994) is taking the wraps off three new antennas at NBAA’12. The first is the S72-1735-24/-26 TAS/Tcas directional antenna designed to pair with the Garmin GTS 800 traffic system. The antenna has better bearing accuracy than its predecessors, which means users see the traffic depicted just where it is. The antenna style is low-drag, making it a good fit on regional jets and business jets.

Last year there were a handful of companies promoting devices that could capture weather and traffic signals from the growing network of ADS-B ground stations deployed around the U.S. This year, the market and the makers of ADS-B devices have exploded, and buyers now have an array of choices.
The good news is that these devices are now available for both Android and Apple devices. The even better news is that some manufacturers have added fairly significant capabilities to their ADS-B devices, although some of these have yet to begin deliveries.
