Curing the sealant that holds aircraft windshields in their frames can take up to 48 hours, according Lyon, France-based Sunaero (Hall 2B, Stand C140-158). This can result in maintenance specialists and their airline customers releasing aircraft back to service before sealant is fully cured. While maintenance standards allow such an early release of the aircraft and safety is not at stake, sometimes the windshield has to be sealed again after the next landing, said Fabrice Parodi, Sunaero’s sales and marketing director.
An investigation by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau concluded that good planning and quick crew reactions were responsible for the lack of injuries and significant damage after failure of the windshield of an Australian-registered Citation X on January 15.

For helicopters, the covers can also be fitted to air inlets, pitot and static ports and canopies, among other areas. Design variations are limitless, according to the company.
PPG Aerospace won a contract to supply cockpit windows for the new Eclipse 550, as well as improved-design windshield spares and side-cockpit window spares to Eclipse Aerospace for the existing Eclipse 500 fleet. The lighter-weight glass-faced acrylic windshields for both aircraft will be heated, meet requirements to resist strike by a two-pound bird at 200 knots and have an anti-static coating. The side-cockpit windows will be acrylic. PPG will start cockpit window deliveries to Eclipse in the middle of next year to coincide with deliveries of the first Eclipse 550s.

PPG Industries’ aerospace transparencies group yesterday was tapped by Cessna Aircraft to supply the cockpit windows for the new Citation Latitude. The heated windshield and side cockpit window for the super-midsize jet will be made of PPG’s chemically strengthened Herculite II glass, which is lightweight but can still resist impact by a four-pound bird at 305 knots.
PPG Aerospace Transparencies group has started full-scale commercial production of its Opticor advanced transparency material at its Sylmar facility in Los Angeles. Opticor is being used for the outboard surface of the cabin windows for the soon-to-be-certified Gulfstream G650 corporate jet (a G650 window is on display on the company’s stand here at the show, at Hall 4 Stand B10).
