Raisbeck Engineering and Analytical Methods Inc. (AMI) have formalized a two-decade-long business relationship by signing a multi-year design and consulting contract. Raiseck Engineering produces aftermarket kits aimed at improving the performance of business and commercial aircraft.
Mention Wichita, and most people in the business aviation industry immediately think of Cessna, Raytheon/ Beech, Learjet or Boeing. Aviation history buffs and old-timers are likely to add Laird Airplane, Culver Aircraft, Travel Air or Stearman
to the list. But it’s a good bet that very few, if any, would even mention the National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR).
After almost a year without a stated estimate of a certification target date for its SJ30-2, San Antonio-based Sino Swearingen now says it expects to receive the type certificate under Part 23 (commuter category) in the third quarter of next year.

Honda’s “research project” light jet now has its first logbook entry. The six-passenger HondaJet (its now-official provisional name) broke ground for the first time on December 3 from Honda’s purpose-built research facility at Piedmont Triad Regional Airport (GSO), Greensboro, N.C., on the leasehold of FBO and mod specialist Atlantic Aero.
Supersonic business jet hopeful Aerion is still building a consortium to develop its airplane. In March the board of the Reno, Nevada-based company approved continued funding of the project through to program launch.
Boeing is using Qinetiq’s low-speed wind tunnel for continuing evaluation of the 747-8, the latest iteration of the world’s first twin-deck widebody jetliner now midway through its fourth decade. The facility is located here at Farnborough, on the north side of the airfield.
Aviation Technology Group has added Goodrich Aircraft Interior Products, Kavlico, Moritz and Parker Aerospace to its list of suppliers for its Williams FJ33-powered Javelin business jet and derivatives. Under the terms of the contracts, Goodrich will supply pilot seats, Kavilco the throttle quadrant, Moritz the power distribution system and Parker the hydraulics.
The National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR), located on the campus of Wichita State University, is now running at full capacity following several lab renovations and additions. In the past 15 months, NIAR completed major upgrades to its crash dynamics laboratory and wind tunnel, and it opened a new advanced joining laboratory and an aircraft structural testing and evaluation center.
In Cologne, Germany, the $412 million European Transonic Wind Tunnel (ETW)– a multinational joint venture among France, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK–is gradually increasing its workload. The main feature of the wind tunnel is the use of cold nitrogen to aerodynamically offset the smaller size of the model tested, compared to the actual aircraft.
