Aluminum specialist Alcan (Hall 2 Stand B19) is developing new alloys and new processes to better compete with composite materials, the proportion of which has been steadily increasing in airframes over the past decades. At Voreppe in France, Alcan Engineered Products (Alcan EP) has a major research-and-development  (R&D) center to devise and test these solutions.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has approved the Part 145 certification for Aerospace Welding Minneapolis. The certificate has been issued under the terms of the current Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement and the associated Maintenance Implementation Procedures. The new certification allows the company to export all overhauled and repaired parts to customers in any EASA member country.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has granted Part 145 approval to Aerospace Welding Minneapolis, based in Eagan, Minn. The approval allows Aerospace Welding to export overhauled and repaired parts such as exhaust systems and engine mounts to customers located in any country that is a member of EASA.

Eclipse Aviation displayed a new mockup of its redesigned Eclipse 500 at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., last month, but first flight of the genuine article has been pushed back 30 days (to next July, rather than June) and certification pushed back six months to December 2003.

The National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR), located on the campus of Wichita State University, is now running at full capacity following several lab renovations and additions. In the past 15 months, NIAR completed major upgrades to its crash dynamics laboratory and wind tunnel, and it opened a new advanced joining laboratory and an aircraft structural testing and evaluation center.
