The Known Crewmember Program (KCM) has officially been expanded to include Part 135 and 125 charter pilots, with yesterday’s first nonscheduled airline use of this program at Washington Dulles International Airport. KCM is a risk-based screening system that enables TSA officers to verify the identity and employment status of flight crewmembers.

A temporary flight restriction (TFR), outlined in FDC Notam 4/2985, will be in place on January 28 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. local for aircraft flying into or out of the Washington, D.C. area. The Notam, issued as part of security measures for U.S. President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address, defines the affected area as the boundaries of the current D.C. flight restricted Zone (FRZ) and will prohibit general aviation operations at Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA), Washington Executive/Hyde Field (W32), Potomac Airfield (VKX) and College Park Airport (CGS).

The Solar Impulse completed its coast-to-coast U.S. tour on Saturday when it landed at New York John F. Kennedy International Airport. The electrically powered aircraft flew the 267-mile final leg from Washington’s Dulles International Airport in little more than 18 hours. The tour, which kicked off at the beginning of May, represents the last flights for the aircraft. It will be replaced by a more capable version that will attempt a global circumnavigation in 2015.

TechnicAir Dulles will perform maintenance, repair and overhaul services for the full line of Embraer business jets.

Signature Flight Support launched its sixth Signature TechnicAir yesterday, at Washington Dulles International Airport, and announced the certification of its newest facility as an Embraer authorized service center for the full line of Embraer business jets. Signature Flight Support recently purchased the assets of Sun Aircraft Services, which was a long-term MRO provider and tenant at Signature’s Dulles location before the acquisition.

The wide-cabin Gulfstream G650 recently established four city-pair speed records in five days, the Savannah, Ga.-based aircraft manufacturer announced yesterday. “The G650, which entered service just over two months ago, is redefining what business jet operators can expect from their aircraft,” said company president Larry Flynn.

The G650’s most recent city-pair record came on January 28 on a flight from Moscow Vnukovo Airport to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. It flew the 4,774-nm route in 9 hours 33 minutes, with an average speed of 574 mph.

The Aeronautical Repair Station Association is teaming with the Aircraft Maintenance Technicians Association (AMTA) to honor the first aviation technician, Charles E. “Charlie” Taylor, with an inscription on the Wall of Honor at the Smithsonian’s Steven F.
