Western Australia’s Skywest Airlines last month signed a 10-year strategic alliance with Virgin Blue to fly as many as 18 new turboprops to several new destinations around Australia. The agreement will see Virgin Blue and Skywest establish a code-share relationship on a number of sectors of each other’s domestic networks and allows Virgin Blue and Skywest customers to earn and redeem reward points on each other’s networks.
Australia’s Virgin Blue has reached an agreement “in principle” with Boeing to order up to 50 new 737s, Virgin Airlines Group CEO Brett Godfrey said in a statement released today. “We do not intend to shy away from remaining competitive, and we plan to vigorously defend our core domestic markets,” said Godfrey, who also noted that Virgin Blue plans to secure “additional short-term domestic capacity.”
VirginBlue has postponed the launch of its planned V Australia trans-Pacific services, scheduled for December 15, until at least February 28, because the machinists strike at Boeing will delay delivery of the first 777-300ER slated to perform the service.
A firm order for three 100-seat Embraer E190s from Finnair capped a brisk run of sales activity in the second half of February for the Brazilian airframe builder. The deal raises to 23 the number of E-Jets ordered by the Finnish flag carrier, which took delivery of its seventh E190 last month. It also flies ten 72-seat Embraer E170s.
Brazil’s Embraer announced an order here yesterday from U.S. aircraft leasing company Jetscape for 10 E190 jets, along with options for another 10 aircraft and “purchase rights” for 10 more.
The value of the transaction totals $375 million at list prices, and could reach $1.125 billion if all options and purchase rights are exercised. Deliveries are scheduled to start in 2009.
The bankruptcy administrators in charge of the operations of Ansett Airlines subsidiary Kendall Airlines and independent Ansett affiliate Hazelton Airlines have accepted a A$500,000 ($275,000) deposit from Australiawide Airlines as part of a tentative purchase agreement for both carriers.
