Piper Aircraft has been promoting its new PiperJet in the form of a proof-of-concept aircraft based on the PA-46-500TP Meridian turboprop-single platform. However, officials with the Vero Beach, Fla.-based manufacturer told AIN today that it will appear at the NBAA Convention next month with “the next step” in the evolution of its single-engine very light jet, complete with a full-size mockup.

Vero Beach, Fla.-based Piper Aircraft said it is delaying first deliveries of the single-engine PiperJet from the fourth quarter of 2012 until the second quarter of 2013. To compensate for the delay, Piper favorably changed contract terms for PiperJet customers, including maintaining the price at $2.19 million and changing the CPI escalator date from Oct. 1, 2007, to the beginning of this month.

American Capital today sold its entire stake in Vero Beach, Fla.-based Piper Aircraft to Imprimis, a corporate finance and investment management firm that operates from offices in Bangkok, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam. The new owners have pledged to keep Piper’s headquarters, production and product development facilities in Vero Beach.

Further, Bass said Piper could cut more personnel “if it gets worse,” adding that the manufacturer could reduce its production output by up to 40 percent this year due to the slowdown in sales of general aviation aircraft.

Piper Aircraft has notified local Indian River County and Florida state authorities that it is delaying receipt of a second round of incentive money until economic conditions improve, according to a Piper spokesman. The county and state jointly came up with $32 million worth of incentives last year to keep Piper from moving its headquarters and PiperJet manufacturing activities away from Vero Beach, Fla.

Vero Beach, Fla.-based Piper Aircraft last month announced a 24-percent increase in third-quarter deliveries and an increase in year-over-year deliveries of 18 percent, resulting in a $25 million increase in billings compared with the same period last year. The manufacturer delivered 195 aircraft, compared with 166 deliveries during the same period last year.

The manufacturer delivered 195 aircraft worth $150.5 million in the first nine months, compared with 166 deliveries worth $125 million during the same period last year.

Piper Aircraft has until June 30 to decide whether it will remain in Vero Beach, Fla. An April 28 Indian River County budget resolution approved $12 million to keep Piper Aircraft at its present headquarters, and the state of Florida added another $20 million.

Piper Aircraft yesterday afternoon made it official that the aircraft manufacturer is staying put in Vero Beach, Fla., following a two-year site-selection process that pitted Vero against Albuquerque, N.M., and Oklahoma City. Piper president and CEO James Bass and Florida Gov. Charlie Crist jointly made the announcement before the company’s 1,200 workers, who enthusiastically cheered the decision to stay in Indian River County.
