At last month’s AEA show, Ingenio Aerospace introduced a series of products designed to help aircraft manufacturers and interior refurb and completion centers deal with a thorny problem: the rapid pace of smart-device technological change.

Ingenio’s solution replaces in-cabin connectors with a USB-based receptacle into which various smartphone or tablet arms can be attached. The arms, which can handle as much as 250 pounds, include internal wiring for device charging. Devices fit into an Ingenio SmartPlate, which holds the smartphone or tablet securely and also contains the connector that fits the device.
What started in David Gray’s basement a bit more than 13 years ago as Flight Display Systems will now fill an entire BBJ cabin with just about every high-tech connectivity toy and necessity a passenger could want, and they’re on display here at NBAA 2013 (Booth No. N3124).
To meet increasing demand for electrical power to keep portable electronic devices (PEDs) operating during flight and charged for arrival, a new in-seat power system (ISPS) is on display at NBAA 2013. The new dual-mode EmPower system was developed by Astronics Advanced Electronic Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Astronics Corp. (Booth No. N5129).
According to Teledyne Controls, its new enhanced Airborne Data Loader technology is “dramatically reducing” operating costs of Boeing 737NGs flown by low cost carrier Norwegian Air Shuttle. Savings of up to $11,700 per month for the fleet of 42 aircraft are being realized, simply because of the time saved by engineers loading navigational data into avionics databases.
Emteq has introduced a universal USB charging device for aircraft cabins. The new IntelliUSB SR can charge most portable devices by detecting the initial voltage when the device is plugged in, then selecting the proper charging technology. The three technologies supported are Apple’s iOS, Samsung (for Android devices) and Battery Charging 1.2 (used on many phones in Asia).
Three business aircraft manufacturers have selected Astronics Advanced Electronic Systems EmPower dual-use AC/USB outlets for passengers and crew. The dual-use 1295-8-XX outlet provides both a 115-VAC, 60-Hz and a 5-VDC, 2.1-amp USB socket, which can be used simultaneously. The 115 VAC socket accepts plugs from more than 155 countries and features a third ground to the aircraft structure. Internal LEDs make the plugs easy to find in a dark cabin or cockpit, and status lights indicate whether power is available for each socket.
The UK’s National Grid Electricity Transmission recently took delivery of a Bell 429 that it will use for inspection and maintenance of power lines. It is equipped with an operator workstation in the cabin featuring the SyQuest 20-inch HD display, MX-10 control unit, HD Nano Flash recorder, USB hub ports and a keyboard.
Lufthansa Technik’s Innovation Business Unit has begun production deliveries of its nice HD CMS/IFE (cabin management and in-flight entertainment) system for the new Learjet 70 and 75. It features personal HD video at most seat locations via seven-inch pop-up HD displays. The pop-ups have an ultra-thin, small and lightweight design. The system includes a number of media interfaces–USB, Apple and HDMI–that will enable encoding and streaming on the Ethernet network simply by connecting personal devices to the system to watch and listen.
TE Connectivity is featuring the recently launched CeeLok FAS-T Connector system at its Farnborough International Airshow display (Hall 4 Stand A17). CeeLok is made by the U.S. group’s aerospace, defense and marine division and the new product is designed to fill the need for rugged, small form-factor 10-gigabit Ethernet connectors. Existing network solutions typically use one-gigabit Ethernet, but there is a growing need for faster networking technologies, according to TE Connectivity, and “the 10-gigabit Ethernet protocol has emerged as the solution of choice.”
