Universal Avionics Systems Corp. of Tucson, Ariz., announced that Charles Edmondson, one of the founders of the company along with the late Hubert Naimer, has retired. The two men founded the company in Torrance, Calif., in 1980. As executive vice president, Edmondson had responsibility for Universal Avionics’ worldwide operations. More recently, he served as senior corporate vice president and as a member of the board of directors.
Universal Avionics has obtained supplemental type certification (STC) for its EFI-890R display retrofit in a Gulfstream III. IFR Avionics of Van Nuys, Calif., finished fitting the airplane in late June with four 8- by 9-inch flight displays, Vision 1 synthetic-vision system and an application server hosting Jeppesen electronic charts.
Mid-Canada Mod Center (MC2) was recently awarded an STC for a new avionics suite on Bombardier Challengers. The company installed a suite of Universal Avionics components, including a four-tube EFI-640 flat-panel integrated display, MFD-640 multifunction display, Universal terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS), Dual UNS-1F flight management systems and Universal Cockpit Display (UCD).
Mid-Canada Mod Center has obtained an STC for a complete cockpit upgrade of a Challenger 601-1A with gear from Universal Avionics. The Mississauga, Ontario avionics shop installed four Universal EFI-640 flat-panel flight displays, an MFD-640 multifunction display and terrain awareness and warning system, along with a UNS-1F FMS and handheld Universal Cockpit Display (UCD).
A jury ordered Universal Avionics to pay Honeywell $5.5 million in damages for violating a patent related to Honeywell’s original (pre-“enhanced”) GPWS. The same jury last month ruled in favor of co-defendant Sandel Avionics. All three firms build terrain awareness and warning systems (TAWS) and have been locked in a lawsuits over TAWS patents since 2002.
Universal Avionics announced today that it received supplemental type certification and TSO of its “egocentric” 3-D synthetic vision system, the first SVS built specifically for turbine business aircraft. The initial STC applies to installations in King Air 350s. Synthetic vision systems allow the pilot to see the terrain ahead under any weather condition on the primary flight display, as if looking out the flight deck window.
Universal Avionics and Kansas City Aviation Center have teamed to develop a three-screen LCD upgrade for the Pilatus PC-12. Marketed as a replacement for the turboprop single’s Bendix/King EFIS 40 cockpit with five-inch displays, the Universal EFI-890R avionics system will include a pair of primary displays and a multifunction display, each measuring 8.9 inches diagonally.
Jeppesen says it’s ready to offer avionics makers an enhanced terrain and synthetic-vision database package that it claims offers a much more accurate model of the world than has been available until now.
After receiving an STC for a cockpit retrofit incorporating 15-inch-diagonal displays in the Pilatus PC-12 in May, Innovative Solutions & Support has followed the approval with a version of the system incorporating four 10-inch displays.
