Chicago Jet Group has received the first FAA supplemental type certificate for a future air navigation system (Fans) 1/A+ and controller-pilot datalink communications (CPDLC) retrofit. The Fans/CPDLC system is installed in a Dassault Falcon 50 managed by Chicago Jet and also represents the first Fans-over-Iridium retrofit for a business jet.

Fans capability will be required for flying the most efficient tracks across the North Atlantic, and this retrofit also meets the upcoming Eurocontrol Link 2000+ mandates that take effect on Feb. 5, 2015.

Chicago Jet Group received the first-ever Fans retrofit STC approval from the FAA on September 5, the company and partner Universal Avionics announced yesterday. The Fans 1/A+/controller-pilot datalink communications (CPDLC) system, which was installed in a Dassault Falcon 50 that Chicago Jet group manages for a customer, uses an International Communications Group NxtLink ICS-220A Iridium satcom.

Horizon Air has received FAA approval to fly instrument approaches to required navigation performance (RNP) 0.1 standards in its Bombardier Q400s equipped with Universal Avionics UNS-1Ew flight management systems. The UNS-1Ew Waas/SBAS FMS enables Horizon pilots to fly stable 3-D flight paths to touchdown at airports in the Northwest U.S. that have published RNP approaches, but now to lower RNP 0.1 minimums. Compared to traditional but non-RNP approaches, the RNP approaches have been shown to save time and fuel.

The Future Air Navigation Systems (FANS) evolution is at the center of virtually every discussion about flying these days, and Duncan Aviation (Booth 327) is featuring FANS resources and expert advice throughout the three days of the EBACE show.

Duncan Aviation’s FANS resources include a four-part video on understanding FANS, an e-book download addressing FANS 1/A and, also available for download, a FANS 1/A webinar. The resources also explain controller-pilot data link and automatic dependent surveillance contract (ADS-C) and how they operate.

This year’s RAA Convention virtually coincides with the introduction of Tuscon, Arizona-based Universal Avionics’s new FlexPerf trip performance module, on display this week in the Montreal Convention Center. Designed to provide “advanced” fuel savings predictions for aircraft performance during climb, cruise and descent, the system works with Universal’s Waas/SBAS flight management system (FMS) and multi-mission management system (MMMS).

Universal Avionics has completed helicopter vibration testing and approval for its UniLink UL-800/801 communications management unit (CMU), expanding the company’s line of products designed for the helicopter market. The UniLink UL-800/801 is an ACARS-compatible CMU that includes digital ATIS, pre-departure clearance, aircraft tracking, messaging, weather information and graphics. The system is also provisioned for the Aeronautical Telecommunications Network, providing a platform for future compliance with emerging datalink requirements.

Universal Avionics announced a new extended warranty program for owners of Universal products this week at the Aircraft Electronics Association convention in Las Vegas. The new FlightAssure program is available after expiration of the original two-year warranty and for most older Universal avionics units.

Customers have been asking for extended warranties, according to director of product support Andy Seaton. “They want stability in operating costs. Costly repairs might not be budgeted, and this way they don’t have to worry about a surprise.”

Universal Avionics announced at Heli-Expo ‘13 the recent completion of helicopter vibration testing and approval for its airborne datalink system, the UniLink UL-800/801 communications management unit (CMU), expanding the company’s line of products designed for the helicopter market. Attendees can view and operate the unit at the company’s exhibit (Booth No. C2401).

Today at Heli-Expo, MD Helicopters unveiled its Next Generation Cockpit for the MD Explorer, featuring an integrated, single-pilot IFR-capable flight deck from Universal Avionics. The basic system has a two-screen display, with an optional third screen available for the copilot’s position, and is controlled via a center-panel-mounted CDU or via a cursor controlled by a point-and-click button mounted on the cyclic.
