StandardAero (Booth No. 899) has received an FAA STC for the King Air 200 that involves removal of the airplane’s Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-41-series engines and upgrades to more powerful -42 engines.
Dean Borgman, president of Sikorsky Aircraft since 1998, has been appointed chairman of the company. Named to succeed him as president is Stephen Finger, who previously served as president of Pratt & Whitney’s military engines business. Both appointments took effect last month.
The significance of General Electric’s purchase of Walter Aircraft Engines last year has only recently become evident. The American company appears poised to seriously challenge the primacy of Pratt & Whitney Canada as the principal source of turboprop engines for executive aircraft, light transport twins and more.
Equipment and systems supplier Hamilton Sundstrand has announced pre-show product-support agreements worth almost $350 million. It also won contracts to supply power controllers for the Airbus A350 and control systems for Pratt & Whitney’s PW810C and PW1000G engines. The company’s NP2000 propeller is flying test missions on a C-130, while its propeller for the Airbus A400M spins on another C-130 test bed.
Germany’s MTU Aero Engines has taken an 18 percent stake in the GE38 turboshaft engine powering the Sikorsky CH-53 Super Stallion heavylift helicopter, marking its first entry into a U.S. military engine program. Under the agreement, MTU, which has previously manufactured components only for U.S. military engines, will have responsibility for the power turbine module.
Sikorsky has claimed the number-two position among the world’s helicopter manufacturers, declared CEO Jeff Pino here on Monday. “We are the second largest helicopter manufacturer by revenues and we will soon compete with Eurocopter for the number one position,” said Pino, who has seen his company’s turnover grow on a 22-percent trend, against a 13-percent industry average.
BBA Aviation’s engine repair and overhaul division has added 16 new engine models to its existing authorizations on Pratt & Whitney Canada engines. The additions encompass eight new variants of the PT6A, seven variants of the PW100 and one variant of the PW500.
The business aviation engine maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) market presently serves approximately 26,000 turbine-powered aircraft. The sector worldwide now is worth about $1.8 billion per year.
Working in its own quiet low-key way, Schweizer Aircraft has revealed its new 300CBi. An enhanced upgrade of the company’s strong-selling 300CB, the new 300CBi features a fuel-injected 180-hp Lycoming HIO-360-C1A engine. Schweizer maintains that throttle correlation is noticeably more precise and engine response is smoother and more immediate than with its predecessor’s carburetor-equipped Lycoming engine.
The San Diego area now has a Pratt & Whitney Canada service center on the McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad, Calif., thanks to Jet Source.
