Ask an airline executive to rank the most frustrating aspects of his job, and labor relations will more often than not top the list, particularly at a time of massive layoffs and salary reductions. Of course, some airlines experience more success than others in maintaining relatively positive relationships with their employees.
Air Wisconsin, a UAL United Express partner, has expressed some confusion with regard to a request by United Airlines to its partners that they submit bids for 70-seat regional jet service within the United Express system.
United Airlines has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with SkyWest Airlines to operate select portions of the company’s United Express service. The MOU, announced June 10, signals an 11-year relationship that includes a new rate structure and allows for more airplanes to be added to the United Express fleet. It also calls for SkyWest to operate a total of 140 aircraft.
There is no short-term fix for the high price of oil, concluded panelists at the Air Service Energy Summit, held on July 10 in Washington, D.C.
United Airlines last month asked a judge overseeing its bankruptcy case for permission to end the code-sharing and marketing agreement with regional carrier Great Lakes Aviation. According to a UAL spokesman, the request is “essentially procedural” and does not mean UAL rejects out of hand Great Lakes as a code-sharing and marketing partner.
Avolar, the “stand alone” UAL Corp. subsidiary created in April to launch a new business aviation venture, has declared that despite the September 11 terrorist attacks and their devastating impact on America’s aviation industry, “Our business plan is unchanged; however, Avolar is now seeking equity investors to share the burden of funding.” Avolar was originally created as United BizJet Holdings.
Boeing’s planned Connexion airborne broadband data service was dealt a damaging blow last month when its three largest customers–American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines–abruptly withdrew from the project in the face of their own fiscal difficulties. As a result, Boeing is left with no equity partners in the venture and only one customer, Lufthansa, for the fledgling in-flight Internet and e-mail service.
The major reductions in airline passenger traffic at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) since September 11 may actually benefit business aviation activities at the airport, as well as SkyWest Airlines, the sole regional airline operation remaining at the large West Coast airport.
