Crane Aerospace & Electronics announced the approval of its SmartStem wireless tire pressure checking system on the Boeing 737NG. Crane said that its patented technology offers a way to check tire pressure quickly, accurately and without gas loss. The system consists of sensors and a handheld reader. The sensors replace the existing standard wheel fill stems and the reader electronically reads and stores tire pressure and temperature.
Once again I was reminded that I never stop learning about flying. This time it was a fuel-injected Cessna Skyhawk, which stubbornly refused to start after I landed and taxied to the gas pump to fill it up before putting it away. It was a gorgeous day in Southern California, light winds, incredible visibility and a fun flight out of Santa Monica Airport.

Duncan has opened a 10th Rapid Response engine service location, this one at Flightcraft in Portland, Ore. Duncan’s other Rapid Response location in the Pacific Northwest is in Seattle. The company said it opened the facility in Portland based on heavy customer demand throughout the region.

Airbus aerostructures supplier Aerolia has received the 500th shipset of nose landing gear bays for the A320 series from Russia’s Irkut. The landmark was celebrated on Tuesday at the MAKS airshow in Moscow. Irkut has been supplying structures and systems to Airbus since 2004 with work packages including keel beams, flap tracks and landing gear bays.
The FAA is adopting an airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Learjet 60s. The AD was prompted by a report of a high-speed rejected takeoff caused by all four main landing gear (MLG) tires blowing out during the takeoff roll.
Canada’s Transportation Safety Board (TSB) released a final report early this month on the June 2010 accident at Ottawa’s MacDonald-Cartier International Airport (CYOW) in which the pilots of a Trans States Airlines Embraer ERJ 145LR were unable to stop the aircraft on the airport’s 8,000-foot Runway 7 during landing. With 33 passengers and a crew of three–none of whom was injured–the aircraft made a smooth touchdown 1,740 feet beyond the threshold of a wet runway approximately eight knots too fast.
Ontic (Hall 5 B219) has signed a license agreement with Tempe, Arizona-based Curtiss-Wright Controls to further expand its electronic and electro-mechanical portfolio–including landing gear levers, tiller modules, pilot LED checklists, flight control surface indicators, rudder trim switches and push-to-talk switches. These products will be moved to Ontic’s manufacturing facilities in Chatsworth, California and Cheltenham, UK.
