The Eurocopter EC 145 is carving a growing niche among EMS helicopter operators for one main reason: cabin space. The EC 145 features 213 cu ft of cabin space and 50.8 sq ft of tracked flat floor space with enough room, in a pinch, for two patient litters and three medical attendants.

Air Comm (Booth No. 3748) is supplying vapor-cycle air-conditioning systems to Eurocopter for the U.S. Army’s Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) program, which is led by EADS North America. Designated UH-72 by the Army, the LUH is a variant of the Eurocopter EC 145. According to Keith Steiner, Air Comm’s evaporator configuration is important to the Army.

American Eurocopter is adding 150 employees at its Golden Triangle plant in Mississippi over the next 18 to 24 months to support an increased production rate of the UH-72A Lakota, its EC 145 variant for the U.S. Army. Currently 176 employees work at the plant, which also assembles AS 350 AStars and provides support for U.S. Coast Guard AS 365 Dolphins.

The start of construction for American Eurocopter’s new parts manufacturing facility in Columbus, Miss., was marked by an August 7 groundbreaking ceremony. Grand Prairie, Texas-based American Eurocopter revealed last October that it planned to build a major production and finishing facility at Golden Triangle Regional Airport near Columbus. The facility will focus on constructing helicopter components for the AS 350, EC 130 and AS 355.

Deliveries of the Eurocopter UH-72A (EC 145) Lakota to the U.S. Army are gathering pace since the first helicopter entered into service in November 2006. Last month the first operational unit received its first aircraft, and the second unit began accepting aircraft a few days ago.

None of the world’s major helicopter manufacturers stands to lose more than Eurocopter should the U.S. economy falter. The company is making large capital investments throughout the country to sustain its huge production, support, warehouse and training operations in Texas, Ohio and elsewhere. The last thing it wants is a recession wiping away sales already in its order book.
