Given how critical the tail rotor is to basic helicopter flight, it is difficult to believe that ground-breaking NASA research on tail-rotor effectiveness (and the loss thereof) could languish in a filing cabinet at the Langley research center for nearly two decades. But it happened.

The crew of a vintage Bell UH-1D Huey had flown their 1965 helicopter from their base in Concord, Calif., to the 2011 National Championship Air Races at Stead Field in Reno, Nev. There, they were to be part of the National Aviation Heritage Invitational static display and competition, which is held annually at the races. It was a chance for the owners and crew of the meticulously restored “25th Infantry” helicopter to win an award for their work.

Honeywell's T53 engine

Air Technology Engines (ATE) of Naples, Fla., signed a T53 service center agreement with Honeywell, authorizing ATE to repair and overhaul Honeywell’s T53 series engine, which powers the Bell UH-1H Huey and other helicopters.

Bell Helicopter (Booth No. 237) and helicopter mods specialist LifePort (Booth No. 2737) teamed to develop a customized, advanced armament solution for a Huey II now in service with the Rio de Janeiro Policia Militar. The customized armor adds security for pilots, passengers and crew.

The BLR FastFin is a major part of Bell’s recently announced enhancements for the 412EP medium-twin. FastFin will be standard on all new 412s and available via retrofit on existing aircraft. More than 600 already are in service on the UH-1, 205/206 and 212/412, according to Dave Marone, BLR vice president. Those aircraft have logged more than one million flight hours with the system.

Bell Helicopter has begun converting OH-58A Kiowa cabins into OH-58D Kiowa Warrior cabins, the company announced here at Farnborough. The aim of the program is to replace OH-58Ds that have been damaged beyond repair.
