The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) each granted the Boeing 787-9 an amended type certificate, paving the way for Air New Zealand to take delivery of the first production example early this summer, Boeing announced on Monday morning. The FAA also has granted Boeing an amended production certificate, validating that the Boeing production system can produce 787-9s that conform to the design. EASA accepts FAA oversight of Boeing production certificates, just as the FAA accepts EASA oversight of European manufacturers’ production certificates.
Cessna announced that its company-owned service centers in Paris; Doncaster, UK; and Düsseldorf, Germany, are authorized as continuing airworthiness management organizations (Camo) by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Camo approval enables these service centers to issue and extend airworthiness review certificates to EASA-registered aircraft.
328 Design, part of the 328 Group (Booth 5546), has been awarded two supplemental type certificates that it developed in conjunction with Battle Creek, Michigan-based Duncan Aviation (Booth 4634). Both STCs were for modifications to the Dassault Falcon 900EX. One covers replacement of five single-passenger seats with new seats from UTC Aerospace Systems. The other STC covers replacement of the original CMS/inflight entertainment system with the Rockwell Collins Venue cabin management system and Emteq LED cabin lighting.
Field Aviation has received a supplemental type certificate from the FAA for its proprietary long-range fuel modification for the Bombardier Dash 8-100/200/300. Transport Canada (TC) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have also STC’d the modification.
Commercial use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) is possible once manufacturers demonstrate the airworthiness of their designs, according to the manager of the FAA’s UAS Integration Office. “It’s a two-way street,” advised Jim Williams. “The FAA can’t pull the industry up.”
The FAA aims to delegate authority to the six national unmanned aircraft system (UAS) test ranges it has chosen to issue their own experimental airworthiness certificates to manufacturers to test fly aircraft. The North Dakota test range, which planned to begin operations this week as the first range to receive an FAA certificate of authorization (COA), expects to eventually have two designated airworthiness representatives.
At the 57th annual Aircraft Electronics Association (AEA) convention, held in Nashville, Tenn., from March 12 to 15, the AEA announced that 2013 worldwide general aviation avionics sales exceeded $2.4 billion, 6.9 percent higher than the comparable 2012 number. Of the $2.4 billion in sales generated last year, 54 percent were for forward-fit (new aircraft) and 46 percent for retrofit (aftermarket). “There are many signs for our market recovery,” said Paul Derks, AEA president.
An emergency airworthiness directive, effective immediately–AD 2013-12-06–was issued March 24 covering Airbus Helicopters legacy models MBB BK117A-3, BK117A-4, BK117B-1 and BK117C-2 that use a Metro Aviation vapor-cycle air conditioning kit pulley. Affected aircraft use pulley number 30001 installed in accordance with supplemental type certificate SH3880SW, which now requires immediate inspection of the drive pulley for looseness and properly installed lock wires and reinstallation of the pulley.
JetTech has teamed with Ultra Electronics Flightline Systems to develop a replacement digital engine display specifically for 500-series Cessna Citations. Pending FAA approval of its supplemental type certificate, Jettech will begin offering kits through its approved FAA certified repair stations.
Indianapolis-based Comlux America expects to receive a supplemental type certificate (STC) for 600-series Bombardier Challengers by the fourth quarter. The STC project installs and certifies the equipment required for operation in airspace requiring Fans/controller-pilot datalink communications. The system incorporates equipment from Universal Avionics Systems, International Communications Group and L-3 Aviation Recorders. Comlux America will start the initial installation in early spring for an unidentified launch customer.
