The all-composite wing box of Russia’s next-generation Irkut MC-21 narrowbody jetliner is back in testing, according to the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) near Moscow. In January the first wing box cracked under excessive loading, the institute reported, but in February the testing continued on the second specimen.

The simulator for the PowerJet SaM146 engine destined to power the Superjet 100 regional airliner had recently arrived at the Sukhoi Civil Aircraft (SCAC) headquarters in suburban Moscow when, early last month, engineers incorporated the device into the so-called electronic bird, a systems integration rig complete with cockpit simulator and wrap-around visual system.

Despite a business dispute with Tekhnoavia (AIN, February, page 10), Geneva-based Intracom General Machinery has vowed to continue the Viper project. The GM-17 Viper is a modified Piper P Navajo, from which the two wing-mounted 425-hp piston engines are removed and a single 750-shp Walter M601E turboprop is placed in the redesigned forward fuselage, among the improvements.

Russian military aviation has a long history of fierce competition between the two major design bureaus–Mikoyan and Sukhoi–and their associated production centers. One consequence of this rivalry was that many of the major enterprises and research institutes associated with military aircraft production became primarily associated with one design bureau or the other.
