Sandel Avionics is concluding certification flight testing of its helicopter-specific terrain awareness warning system and plans delivery of the $18,950 H-Taws shortly after TSO issuance and certification, expected by early April. Sandel president Gerry Block told AIN that with radio altitude and air data computer inputs the panel-mounted H-Taws will meet or exceed performance of any current Taws for helicopters.
Traffic Collision Avoidance System
For many, multilateration (sometimes abbreviated Mlat) is one of those vague ATC terms that is always hard to define. Put simply, it is how a spread-out group of small, unmanned, ground-based “listening posts” continuously monitors aircraft transponder signals, and then collectively triangulates them to derive individual aircraft positions. Following that, they send those positions plus their idents, altitudes and other data to ATC.
It’s official: Garmin can now add to its list of avionics specialties the coveted title of TCAS maker. The company announced last month it has gained an approved model list STC for its recently launched line of traffic alert systems, including a fully functioning TCAS I. The approval permits installations of the products in some 580 general aviation aircraft, with more expected to be added to the blanket authorization later this year.
Intercontinental Jet Services is in the process of certifying a Sagem glass cockpit as part of the Limited Edition (LE) refurbishment package for the Mitsubishi MU-2-40 and 60 turboprops. Intercontinental Jet (Booth No. 2932) expects supplemental type certificate approval later this year.
Rockwell Collins introduced a Pro Line 4 to Pro Line 21 upgrade for the Falcon 2000 that replaces the airplane’s original CRT screens with a suite of four 8- by 10-inch LCDs.
The upgrade adds capabilities for XM satellite weather, electronic charts, enhanced display of TAWS, radar, TCAS and EVS, improved moving maps and Waas LPV approach capability.
Columbia Avionics in Columbia, Mo., has completed an avionics modernization program in a Cessna Citation 650 for Chile’s civil aviation department. The upgrade included a three-display retrofit with Universal Avionics EFI-890R displays, Vision 1 synthetic-vision system, terrain awareness and warning system, flight management systems, TCAS II and group RVSM approval.
SimCom Training Centers has added Falcon 20 and Westwind II full-flight simulators and a King Air 350 Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 flight-training device to its menu of training programs. The two level-C simulators and the FTD will be located here in Orlando.
ACSS, the Phoenix-based surveillance and reconnaissance technology division of L-3 Communications (Booth No. 4000), is at NBAA’09 showcasing a number of new developments. These include new TCAS II traffic and collision avoidance system software, selection of its latest TCAS II system by Embraer, enhanced terrain avoidance warning system (TAWS) functionality and progress in its SafeRoute terminal area guidance program.
Sandel Avionics of Vista, Calif., has begun pre-certification flight testing of a helicopter-specific terrain avoidance warning system based on its fixed-wing class-A TAWS. The system, HTAWS, will meet or exceed performance for any current class-B TAWS for helicopters, company founder and president Gerry Block told NBAA Convention News. Initial flight testing is taking place at San Diego’s Montgomery Field using a Eurocopter AS 350B2 AStar.
On a Sept. 15, 2006 flight from Alicante, Spain, to Bristol, England, the captain of an Airbus A319 lost all his displays, auto-pilot and autothrust over Nantes, France. He handed control over to the copilot, who had all his displays, except the flight director, and would need to hand-fly using raw data. The commander tried to make contact with Brest Control using all radio facilities, but with no success.
