Crane Aerospace & Electronics announced the approval of its SmartStem wireless tire pressure checking system on the Boeing 737NG. Crane said that its patented technology offers a way to check tire pressure quickly, accurately and without gas loss. The system consists of sensors and a handheld reader. The sensors replace the existing standard wheel fill stems and the reader electronically reads and stores tire pressure and temperature.
Michelin and the FAA Safety Program (FAAST) have partnered to offer pilots and aircraft maintenance technicians a free online tire maintenance course titled The Impact of Tire Maintenance on Aircraft Safety. “Tire maintenance is often overlooked in aviation; this course will help reinforce this important part of aviation safety,” said Brad Beall, Michelin Aircraft Tire zone director for North and South America.

Helitowcart unveiled its new dual-wheel assembly for the Robinson R44 and R66 at Heli-Expo ’13, adding to its line of helicopter handling devices and accessories. Like the company’s other dual-wheel assemblies, the Robinson kit caters to personnel operating on rugged terrain, or who wish to distribute aircraft weight on four tires. The wheel assembly offers two possible heights, is constructed from heavy-duty materials and offers long-arm control to ease rotation. The assembly is also designed to maintain solid contact with the helicopter skid.
Dassault Falcon received EASA and FAA approval to install the SmartStem tire pressure system on Falcon 50s. The system provides a fast and reliable method of checking tire pressure without gas loss while reducing maintenance costs, improving convenience and automatically tracking tire pressure checks. It is also designed for easy retrofit to existing aircraft since it is compatible with all standard tire maintenance equipment.
Crane Aerospace & Electronics has received a number of new product approvals and selections on a variety of business jets. Crane’s FAA-approved SmartStem wireless tire pressure monitoring system now allows Part 135 pilots to check tire pressures on all certified aircraft. “There are presently no other products on the market that allow a Part 135 pilot to check his own tires,” the company noted.
Eclipse Aerospace is offering an anti-skid braking system for new and existing Eclipse 500/550s. The lack of anti-skid braking has proved a problem for the airplane, with locked brakes contributing to several blown-tire incidents. The system, which adds approximately 17 pounds to aircraft empty weight, includes brake control and wheel speed sensors, a dedicated control computer and software updates to the avionics. Testing has indicated it is possible to stop the aircraft from normal landing speeds in less than 750 feet using “aggressive” braking.
The FAA has approved the Crane Aerospace & Electronics SmartStem tire pressure management system for use in Part 135 safety checks. In a letter to the system’s manufacturer, the agency stated, “It is our opinion that pilots conducting Part 135 operations may use the SmartStem to perform daily tire pressure checks as a pre-flight task if the system has been properly installed on the aircraft by means of an STC or other FAA approval.”
The FAA recently issued a legal opinion that allows Part 135 pilots to check tire pressure on all certified aircraft using Crane Aerospace & Electronics’ SmartStem wireless tire pressure monitoring system. According to Crane, there are currently no other products on the market that allow Part 135 pilots to check their own tires.
Mecaer Aviation is to design and manufacture the landing gear system for Bell Helicopters’s new 525 Relentless twin. The Italian company, which already provides landing gear for the existing 429 model, will be responsible for engineering, system integration, and the production of a complete ‘bolt-on’ system, comprising nose and main gears, electro-mechanical actuation, the braking system, wheels, tires and control panel. Mecaer also provides landing gear for AgustaWestland.
