The Jacksonville Aviation Authority chose Craig Airport for a Florida Department of Transportation program to test a system that will visually monitor day and night airport operations for security and to enhance airport operations. The Integrated GA Airport Security System (IGASS) uses infrared cameras to detect aircraft movements and monitor perimeter security.

Seattle Falcon 50 operator Mariner Air has ordered a Max-Viz EVS-1000 enhanced-vision system (EVS), a setup that will include an uncooled IR sensor in the top of the tail and a head-down cockpit display. Western Aircraft of Boise, Idaho, will perform the installation. The Max-Viz sensor system was first certified in March aboard a Challenger 601-3A. Cessna has selected a dual-sensor version, the EVS-2000, for the Citation X and Sovereign.

Might a civil helicopter be next in line to benefit from an infrared-sensor-based enhanced vision system (EVS)? Max-Viz, of Portland, Ore.–formed two years ago to develop and market EVS for business jets–reports fast-growing interest in the concept among helicopter operators and OEMs attending last month’s Heli-Expo convention in Dallas.

L-3 Avionics Systems has received STC approval and parts manufacturer approval aboard the King Air C90 for the Iris infrared imaging system. The C90 is the first application for Iris, which a spokeswoman said is generating “tremendous interest. We have installation and certification programs under way for many different platforms.”

Max-Viz, has expanded the list of helicopters on which its EVS-1000 thermal imaging system has been certified since Heli-Expo 2006, announcing the addition of the Bell 206 and LongRanger series, the 407, 412 and 412EP.
