“Engineered with Passion” is more than a clever catchphrase. At Dassault Aviation, it effectively summarizes a company-wide culture. Even though the image of engineers doesn’t normally go hand in hand with passion, in this case, the apparent contradiction seems appropriate. After spending last year traveling the globe with world-renowned aviators, Breitling’s first (of 500) Naval Centennial Limited Edition Airwolf timepiece is being auctioned online to benefit the National Flight Academy. The auction will close at 5 p.m. EST on February 29. The first-off-the-line watch was worn by aviators in a global journey that started with Commander Mark Kelly on Space Shuttle Endeavour’s last flight into space in May.
Kevin Bredenbeck, the pilot who flew Sikorsky’s X2 technology demonstrator last year to an unofficial speed record for conventional helicopters (reportedly 260 knots), has been recognized by the Society of Experimental Test Pilots with the Iven C. Kincheloe Award for the year’s outstanding professional accomplishment in flight testing.
William “Bill” McGrath, 60, died in late December, following a battle with cancer. After flying B-52s in the USAF, McGrath began his business aviation career in 1985, joining Dallas-based SimuFlite as director of marketing and sales. He served as president and CEO of Vector Training Systems, and led sales and marketing efforts for SkyPlus Technologies before establishing his own consulting business.
Testing under way at NASA Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards AFB in California is aiming to prove whether pilots can use high-definition video cameras and LCD monitors to take off and land a supersonic business jet (SSBJ) in lieu of natural forward vision.

After a few moments, during which the MD 600N helicopter plummets toward the ground engaged in a sweeping left turn, the first pilot’s voice comes over the radio. “Recovering.” He recovers at approximately 100 ft over the desert floor.
“Roger. Recover.” This voice belongs to the pilot of the chase aircraft, also an MD helicopter.
In March, Socata appointed Stéphane Jacques as its new chief test pilot. The 44-year-old pilot succeeded Christian Briand, who retired after a 40-year career, 19 of them as a Socata test pilot, logging more than 19,000 flight hours.
Tom Macdonald, the Osprey V-22 chief test pilot, received the Iven C. Kincheloe Award from the Society of Experimental Test Pilots. The award, established in memory of Kincheloe, who died in 1958 in the course of flight-testing an F-104 Starfighter, is presented annually for outstanding flight-test accomplishments.

The Empire Test Pilots’ School (ETPS) has announced the launch of a new 13-week rotary-wing flight test course set to begin next August. The program will be held at the home of the UK’s joint Ministry of Defence (MOD)/QinetiQ aircraft test and evaluation center at Boscombe Down.
