The move to touchscreen control of avionics gained speed today with Garmin’s announcement of the G2000 integrated flight deck, featuring its GTC 570 vehicle management system (touchscreen controller). The G2000 is aimed at Part 23 piston-powered aircraft and will see its first installation in Cessna’s Corvalis TTX, branded by Cessna as the Intrinzic avionics system.
Terrain awareness and warning system
Sandel Avionics is demonstrating the wire-strike prevention feature it is adding to its HeliTaws terrain-avoidance system. The Vista, Calif., displays manufacturer (Booth No. 3518) is showing comparison video from a helicopter flight over northern San Diego County with simultaneous side-by-side presentations of the Helitaws and another company’s terrain awareness warning system (Taws).
While much hand-wringing surrounds the FAA's plans for implementation of the NextGen air transportation system and Europe's single European sky system, some of the airborne equipment required is already on its way into cockpits. The first certified ADS-B in equipment for an in-production aircraft is ACSS's T3cas traffic management computer, according to ACSS (Aviation Communications and Surveillance Systems).
Garmin has received FAA STC approval for its helicopter terrain awareness and warning system for the GNS 430W/530W GPS/navcoms. The HTaws is available immediately as an option on newly purchased systems or as a field upgrade for current owners. Garmin’s HTaws has forward-looking terrain avoidance capability with visual and aural advisories to keep pilots informed of hazardous terrain and obstacles.
Embraer has certified a new traffic collision alert and avoidance system (TCAS) and a terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS) for its Phenom 100 light jet.
Sandel Avionics, Vista, Calif., has gained TSO and Part 27 supplemental type certificate (STC) approvals for its class-A HeliTAWS helicopter terrain avoidance and warning system, which includes a proprietary nuisance-alert elimination feature and high-resolution 3-D terrain display.
Sandel Avionics last month announced TSO approval for its HeliTaws helicopter terrain warning system. Sandel said that with radio altitude and air-data computer inputs, HeliTaws will meet or exceed the performance of any current Taws for helicopters.
MD Helicopters is expected to begin offering a glass cockpit for new MD500 series beginning next month. United Rotorcraft Solutions is finishing flight testing on the STC it is developing for MD. United president David Brigham said the STC will also be offered as a retrofit for existing 500s through MD’s repair station in Mesa and through his company. He estimates installation time to be two to three weeks.
In its annual review of most wanted transportation safety improvements, the NTSB updated its list of items requiring rapid attention and added a new urgent concern to the aviation category as a result of the investigation into last year's Colgan Air crash.
Garmin unveiled the G500H glass avionics system and a terrain awareness and warning system (Taws) for the helicopter market just before Heli-Expo last month.
