While most aviation safety sources have identified loss of control (LOC) as the leading cause of accidents in the past few years, controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) “is making a strong comeback,” according to Flight Safety Foundation fellow Jim Burin.

Kitchener Aero Avionics has completed a new upgrade package for the Cessna 208 Caravan. The heart of the upgrade is an Aspen EFD-1000C3 PFD and Class B Taws. “For hardworking Caravans–especially those in commercial operations–this mod can really make a difference,” said Kitchener president Barry Aylward. The Aspen PFD replaces the problematic and expensive gyros in the Bendix/King KFC 150/225 flight control systems that were originally installed in the 208 fleet.
While Sikorsky was busy unveiling its freshly certified S-76D to an eager Heli-Expo crowd, its partner in avionics Thales Group was nearby at Booth No. C6428 demonstrating the TopDeck integrated avionics system that it developed specifically for the new helicopter.
Today at Heli-Expo, Enstrom Helicopter announced that it selected the Garmin G1000H integrated digital flight deck for its Rolls-Royce 250-powered 480B. The Garmin panel integrates all primary flight information, navigation data, communications, terrain awareness, traffic, weather, and engine parameters on two 10.4-inch displays. It also incorporates a large moving map and supports a wide array of safety enhancing features, including synthetic vision, helicopter Taws, datalink weather and traffic awareness and collision avoidance system, among others.
Garmin’s touchscreen GTN series GPS navcoms have been optimized for helicopters, with new features that eliminate the need for rotorcraft operators to install the fixed-wing GTN version. The new helicopter-optimized GTN comes in five configurations that meet vibration and temperature testing standards and offer optional NVG compatibility and optional H-Taws.
