A modernization program costing at least $100 million is set to kick off at McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville, Tenn. Officials promise no disruption to flights during the estimated six-year-long project, which will see complete rehabilitation of both runways, as well as modifications to the configuration of taxiways. The improvements will affect about 90 percent of the airport’s 90 acres of pavement. An LED taxiway edge lighting system will also be installed, along with a new ILS system.
Last week Embraer eliminated 83 of its 560 Nashville maintenance facility employees. An Embraer spokesman told AIN, “The business cycles of the aviation industry periodically require companies to adjust their workforce to match their customers’ requirements. Such was the case recently at our Nashville commercial aircraft maintenance facility.”
More than two years after Tac Air filed a Part 16 complaint over the construction and operation of an airport-owned FBO at Tennessee’s Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport/Lovell Field, the agency has issued its ruling, finding the airport authority was not in violation of its federal grant obligations.
JA Air Center at Chicago-area Aurora Municipal Airport placed first in AIN’s 2013 FBO Survey for the Americas, the results of which were announced yesterday. The facility earned an impressive average score of 9.5 out of a possible 10. There were more than 12,000 evaluations for FBOs in 89 countries in this year’s survey.
Textron subsidiary Bell Helicopter announced today that it will invest more than $10 million to expand its completion and customer delivery facilities in Piney Flats, Tenn. The additions will include the purchase of a 150,000-sq-ft building adjacent to the site that will house customization and completions of light and medium aircraft as well as the site’s shipping and receiving operations. The project is expected to add approximately 125 new jobs at the location.
Fargo Jet Center officials made the long journey to Dubai to highlight the FBO’s convenience as a point-of-entry for business jets flying to the U.S. from Europe and the Middle East.
Signature Flight Support has chosen the venue of this year’s NBAA Convention to announce several new programs. The BBA Aviation subsidiary, which currently operates a network of more than 115 FBOs worldwide, unveiled a new partnership with secure identification provider Clear, which uses biometric data to speed travelers through airport security. The partnership gives Signature’s customers a discount on registration in the program.

Signature Flight Support officially opened its FBO at Chicago O’Hare International Airport yesterday. The FBO chain’s newly built 9,150-sq-ft facility includes a large lobby area, management offices, a conference room, crew lounge, VIP lounge, ground support equipment maintenance bay and supporting restroom and locker room facilities.
The Army Corps of Engineers has issued a warning to an R44 pilot for plucking party-goers from boats on Tennessee’s Dale Hollow Lake and letting them dangle from the skids before they dropped into the water. The FAA may take separate action.
