Naval LCA

The naval prototype of India’s Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA) made its first test flight on April 27. Already delayed by four years, the program still faces design concerns, including weight. Strengthening of the rear airframe for carrier operations, and the addition of an arrestor hook, has made the aircraft about 1,000 pounds overweight.

Aerion said today that it plans to fly a “more representative” wing test article for its supersonic business jet this summer. Following supersonic tests in 2010 aboard a NASA F-15B, the company has refined the wing design and plans to use the same aircraft to conduct another round of tests in June or July. Fabrication of the 40-inch vertical span by 80-inch chord test article is now under way and will be complete by the end of next month, it said.

The start of an aircraft that could have been a world-beater. I’m referring to Canada’s mighty Avro CF-105 Arrow fighter. But an even more recent anniversary looms on Monday: the 53rd anniversary of its death.
