Aerion has started its next round of high-speed test flights, in conjunction with NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, to validate the laminar-flow wing for its supersonic business jet. These tests, using a test article mounted under the centerline of NASA’s F-15B research aircraft and flown at speeds up to Mach 2.0, are intended to measure the real-world robustness of supersonic natural laminar flow. Information from these tests will help define manufacturing standards for surface quality and assembly tolerances of the proposed SSBJ’s laminar-flow wing.

HyperMach said it is increasing the top speed of its planned supersonic business

HyperMach Aerospace’s planned 20-seat supersonic business jet (SSBJ), dubbed the SonicStar, will be able to fly at Mach 4.0, the company said Friday in Dubai. This is faster than the Mach 3.6 top speed announced when the proposed V-tailed aircraft was first revealed in June at the Paris Air Show. At Mach 4, the SonicStar would be able to fly from New York to Dubai in just 2 hours 20 minutes.

HyperMach Aerospace Industries unveiled plans for its SonicStar V-tailed supersonic business jet (SSBJ) at the Paris Air Show. The company is making big claims for an aircraft that it says will take no more than one hour 45 minutes to fly from Paris to New York, but left many questions unanswered as to how it will take the concept to market.

Reno, Nev.-based Aerion today said it is evaluating preliminary results of a new global market survey indicating strong demand for its supersonic business jet. “It was time to take a fresh look at the potential for the Aerion supersonic jet, taking into account the globalization of the business jet market,” said Aerion vice chairman Brian Barents.

As expected, the recession has taken a toll on aircraft manufacturers and would-be manufacturers. But while the list of canceled and delayed projects includes the inevitable marginal programs, the crop of active manufacturers is–with few exceptions–forging ahead with new aircraft.

Aerion, the U.S. company that is developing a supersonic business jet (SSBJ), has welcomed an FAA policy shift which it believes “seems to crack open the door for supersonic cruise speeds” if, in the words of FAA policy guidance released last month, “the noise impacts of supersonic flight are shown to be acceptable.”

Hopeful manufacturers of supersonic business jets–Aerion, Gulfstream and Supersonic Aerospace International–are encouraged by an updated FAA policy statement issued last week to align noise limits for future civil supersonic aircraft with current Stage 4 noise regulations.
