The NTSB has issued a preliminary report on a Dec. 28, 2011, incident in which a Cessna Citation VII was substantially damaged when it departed the runway during an emergency landing at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE) and crashed into an airport perimeter fence. The Citation had just departed from FXE on a Part 91 flight to Teterboro, N.J. when, according to the crew, they began experiencing “extreme” difficulty in controlling the aircraft. The captain reported that he needed to apply “a little left control” before the Citation entered a slow right turn that he could not stop.
A problem with a weight on wheels (WOW) switch is being eyed in the American Airlines Boeing 757-200 that ran off the end of snow contaminated Runway 19 at Jackson Hole, Wyo., on December 29. The flight from Chicago with 181 aboard ended up in the snow 658 feet beyond the end of the 6,300-foot-long runway; however, there were no injuries or damage to the aircraft.
Bombardier Learjet 35A, Goodland, Kan., Oct. 17, 2007–The pilot’s failure to maintain control of the Learjet was the cause of its running off the runway on landing at Renner Field, according to the NTSB.
Bombardier Learjet 35A, Goodland, Kan., Oct. 17, 2007–The Jagee Ventures Learjet broke out of the clouds at 250 feet agl on approach to Runway 30 at Renner Field, slightly left of centerline. The pilot, in aligning the airplane with the centerline, experienced an uncontrolled left and right rolling motion.
Wooden tongue depressors are implicated in the hard landing of a Gulfstream V last February 14 that drove the right main landing gear up through the wing, causing substantial structural damage but no injuries.
Bombardier Learjet 35A, Nashville, Tenn., Dec. 26, 2006–The pilot’s inadequate compensation for a gusty crosswind, which resulted in loss of control and a wing strike on the runway, was responsible for the landing accident involving a Secure Air Charter Learjet, according to the NTSB.
Two non-fatal accidents involving runway overruns of the Raytheon Premier I in which the lift-dump spoilers failed to deploy have led to an AD. The directive (AD 2003-07-09) requires Premier I operators to temporarily replace existing landing-distance charts with those that reflect the increased landing distance without the lift-dump spoilers deployed.
GULFSTREAM V, WEST PALM BEACH, FLA., FEB. 14, 2002–Gulfstream N777TY was substantially damaged when it made a hard landing at West Palm Beach International Airport (PBI).
The pilot of the Raytheon Beech Premier I that overran the runway at Herrera International Airport in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on January 7 told the NTSB that after making a “normal approach and landing” the lift dump spoilers were activated, “but the system failed.” The airplane hit two vehicles, crossed a road and came to rest inverted. The two pilots and two passengers were not injured.
BOMBARDIER LEARJET 25C, LEXINGTON, KY., AUG. 30, 2002–The captain’s addition of forward thrust during the landing rollout, resulting in a lack of braking effectiveness, was listed by the NTSB as the cause of a runway overrun accident by Learjet 25C N45CP. A factor was the captain’s inability to deploy the thrust reversers for undetermined reasons.
