Iridium Communications of McLean, Va., last month placed a multibillion-dollar order with Thales Alenia Space of France for 81 communications satellites needed to upgrade its global satellite communications network. The $2.1 billion deal includes 66 low-earth-orbit satellites for the Iridium Next constellation, with the remainder to serve as spares.

The first satellite launch is scheduled for the first quarter of 2015.

TrueNorth Avionics has gained the initial supplemental type certificate (STC) for its Simphone Global Broadband System, billed as a compact and low-cost high-speed-data satcom system for business jets. Developed in collaboration with Cobham, the satcom system links through Inmarsat’s SwiftBroadband satellite data service and features the first use of Cobham’s recently introduced IGA 5001 intermediate-gain satcom antenna.

One of the founders and innovators of the TKS anti-icing system plans to launch the world’s first environmentally friendly anti-icing fluid called TKS Sustain, based on propane diol rather than the more traditional ethylene glycol. Kilfrost, exhibiting here at Booth No. 5513, has submitted the product for certification and expects to gain approval to market it this coming winter.

The CMC Electronics CMA-2102SB high-gain satcom antenna has been certified on the A380 and A330/340. The new-generation antenna supports Inmarsat Aero-H+, Swift64 and SwiftBroadband services and is intended for installation atop the fuselage. Inmarsat mobile satellite service enables long-range, oceanic communications between pilots and controllers as well as e-mail, SMS messaging and phone-calling services for passengers on some airlines.

On Tuesday the ITT Corporation hosted a round-table of climate-change and climate-monitoring experts here at the Paris Air Show. The Le Bourget company’s role in this vital area was also evidenced by a number of important contract awards.
NASA announced that it had chosen ITT to help the agency design and develop a set of instruments to measure carbon dioxide levels from air and space.

Iridium said it has begun taking steps to replace a lost communication satellite with one of eight in-orbit spares. The collision of a 2,000-pound decommissioned Russian satellite with the smaller Iridium craft on February 10 created a swirling field of debris but left only a tiny gap in Iridium’s 66-satellite constellation, resulting in brief outages for some customers.

Pilots who have grown accustomed to flying with up-to-the- minute weather graphics and information broadcast to the cockpit through the XM or Sirius satellite radio services are probably aware that the companies successfully completed their “merger of equals” last year. The deal created a combined entity called Sirius XM Radio Inc.
