StandardAero Business Aviation is returning to Van Nuys Airport (VNY) in California. “StandardAero’s reestablished business aviation operation at VNY follows a decade-long absence from the location.
The story of Castle & Cooke Aviation starts like that of many FBOs, with a small flight department needing more space to grow. Craig Walker, Castle & Cooke vice president of operations and development and Dole Food director of aviation, started flying for David Murdock in 1980. Murdock is the chairman, CEO and president of Castle & Cooke, a trading, shipping and agricultural company that originated as a general store in Hawaii in 1864 and eventually ended up owning Dole Food.
The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) will resume contract night helicopter firefighting operations in Southern California next year. The announcement was made recently after the USFS evaluated a study it commissioned that was completed in 2010. That study found that helicopter night operations can mitigate the costs and risks of wildfires by retarding their size.
Western Jet Aviation, a heavy-maintenance facility based at Van Nuys Airport in Southern California, has opened a satellite maintenance base at Reno-Tahoe International Airport in Reno, Nev. Located in the former Jet West FBO facility, the Western Jet satellite is equipped for light through heavy maintenance and staffed by two mechanics. Western Jet founder and general manager Jim Hansen said he plans to employ five to 10 mechanics at the Reno facility. “The airport is committed to grow,” he said.
The Robert F. Maguire Heliport opened on December 4 in Los Angeles. The new heliport is located atop the 15-story Grand Ave. Garage at 240 West Venice next to the I-10 Freeway. It will serve corporate and EMS customers accessing California Hospital, the Los Angeles Convention Center, the Staples Center, the University of Southern California and L.A. Live.
Two new maintenance facilities have joined the Crownair Aviation portfolio: RoigWest Maintenance, a turbine aircraft maintenance service and support center at Van Nuys Airport, and West Coast Jet Services at McClellan Palomar Airport (CRQ), which will now be known as Crownair Aviation-CRQ.
San Diego-based Crownair has acquired RoigWest Maintenance, a turbine aircraft maintenance and support center at Van Nuys Airport, the third busiest general aviation airport in the world, as well as West Coast Jet Services at McClellan Palomar Airport in Carlsbad, Calif. West Coast Jet Services will now be known as Crownair Aviation CRQ. Crownair plans to expand to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in Arizona by 2010.
Chino Airport (Booth No. 1029) in San Bernardino County, Calif., has learned some valuable lessons from its neighbors to the west. The mounting tensions between local residents and airports such as Santa Monica, John Wayne and Burbank, have highlighted the need for improved community relations and prompted Chino Airport authorities to look beyond their own borders in planning the airport’s expansion.
Two pilots and two other crewmembers were killed when their UC-35, a military version of the Citation 560, crashed and caught fire March 10 about half a mile short of the runway while on the approach to Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego. Reported visibility was five miles in mist. The crew was returning from a “proficiency training” mission intended to help them maintain their flying skills.
Million Air Burbank, Calif. (BUR), recently held its grand-opening celebration. The new facility–owned by Harold Lee, who also owns Million Air Van Nuys–provides a second choice for visitors to the “beautiful downtown” city made famous by former Tonight Show host Johnny Carson. The heavily trafficked airport is one of the primary business aviation destinations, along with nearby Van Nuys, for the entertainment industry.
