“Significant extra investment” is required by the UK government and industry if the country is to retain its position as an aerospace powerhouse, the Society of British Aerospace Companies warned just before the Paris Air Show opened. The SBAC has just released figures for 2008 that show sharp declines in both employment and research spending in the UK industry, but a significant shift toward export markets–particularly defense.

This year’s show benefits from recent improvements to infrastructure and facilities as organizer Farnborough International continues a 60-year evolution of development begun by the Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC). One of the first examples was a re-landscaping of the exhibition site in 1980 to accommodate continuing growth.
The Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC) announced last week that it appointed Bruno Esposito as its new director of civil air transport. Esposito’s 30 years in aviation include pilot and air traffic control experience, followed by senior industry positions with Finmeccanica and BAE Consulting Services. He begins his new role at SBAC in September.
At face value, Rolls-Royce’s recent establishment of new facilities in Singapore, the U.S. and Germany might be construed as the group’s snubbing its UK home and a possible indictment of successive British governments that some say have failed to nurture the country’s aerospace industry.
The number of trade days at the next Farnborough International Air Show (July 18 to 23, 2006) has been reduced from five to four. Instead of starting on Monday, as it has in the past, the event will run from Tuesday through Sunday, and the first four days will be reserved for professional visitors, while the weekend will continue to be set aside for the public. There is no officially designated media day.
The UK aerospace industry is well represented at Paris once more, and it continues to thrive as the second largest in the world after the U.S., directly employing some 124,000 people and supporting a total of more than 276,000 jobs, according to the Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC).
Organizers of the UK’s biennial Farnborough International airshow are solidifying exhibitors for the event’s new “business aircraft park.” The show-within-a-show is to be staged over the first three trade days of the main event (July 19 to 21) in Farnborough Airport’s old business enclave.
A new office has been launched by the Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC) to help represent and support the 140 companies and 30,000 employees in the aerospace and defense industries in Scotland. Until SBAC Scotland was formed, the country was the only part of the UK that did not have a representative body covering these industries.
To prioritize and promote unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the United Kingdom, the Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC) and the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Systems Association (UAVS) have signed a memorandum of understanding that will see resources focused on accelerating the implementation of UAV systems and making UK industry globally competitive.
The UK Trade Investment and the Defence Export Services Organisation (DESO) and the Society of British Aerospace companies, together, are taking active roles at Asian Aerospace 2006 by mounting a UK pavilion as well as bringing a trade mission to Singapore.
