As the aviation sector awaits the FAA’s final rule on the safety management systems (SMS) process, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has looked more closely at the status of SMS implementation, as well as at some of the key challenges the FAA and industry face in completing that implementation. The agency’s air traffic organization is currently the only FAA group that has completed the SMS implementation process, although five other agency organizations are finalizing their efforts.

Wichita-based EagleMed enlisted Baldwin Safety & Compliance as an additional resource for the critical care aeromedical transport company’s safety management system (SMS) needs. EagleMed president Larry Bugg said Baldwin’s added services will bolster EagleMed’s “ongoing efforts” to enhance its safety management system. “Baldwin’s comprehensive set of safety management tools will be an added benefit to the company and our patients as we progress toward level three of the FAA’s SMS program,” Bugg said.

Moog’s third-generation lightweight Moog-FTS Stores Management System (SMS) is flying with the Bell 407GT and the MD530G and can be adapted easily to other platforms, said Jason Reichard, Moog business unit director. Reichard said that the main advantages of the new system are its lower cost, much lighter weight and ease of installation across a variety of platforms including helicopter, fixed-wing, marine and land.

The SoCal Aviation Association (SCAA) has developed what might be the first business aviation-focused system in the U.S. to allow users to read and interact with operational safety data from other members of the same organization. Called Share (Safety Hazard Awareness Reporting & Empowerment), the program uses an open-format interface created by Baldwin Aviation and does not require an operating safety management system (SMS).

The calls begin at 11:30 a.m. EST on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month with a current SMS topic followed by a short discussion. The remainder of the call is open to any topic raised by anyone on the phone.

The International Business Aviation Council is holding an International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO) Workshop in Madrid on March 4 and 5. The first-day session assists operators with IS-BAO implementation and provides a practical approach to managing an SMS. The second-day workshop is intended to train IS-BAO auditors, as well as help operators conduct internal audits and validate their SMS performance.

The FAA talks a lot about the importance of safety management systems. It has several web pages dedicated to SMS. Newsletters dedicated to SMS. And employees certainly talk it up at internal and external meetings. But talk is cheap, as we all know.
