Aircell received STC approvals from the EASA for installation of in-flight connectivity and entertainment systems on Bombardier Challenger 300s. Specifically, the certifications cover the Aviator 300 datacom system and UCS 5000 “smart” router and media server. The company said the Aviator 300 STC data package is being offered to Challenger 300 operators for a “nominal fee” when they install the system at an authorized Aircell dealer and activate a new SwiftBroadband service plan. Aircell entered the European market in 2002 and the region is now its second-largest market.
Research Frontiers and licensee Vision Systems announced at the Aircraft Interiors World Expo in Hamburg, Germany, that Vision Systems is investing $750,000 to expand its existing factory in France and will add a production facility dedicated to the manufacture of its SPD-Smart Nuance and Noctis electronically dimmable windows and cabin dividers.
It also plans to establish a similar factory in the U.S. next year for production of SPD-Smart products, including SPD-Smart Nuance and Noctis.
MRO Premier Turbines has invested more than $1 million in a realignment of its Neosho, Mo. Rolls-Royce M250 repair and overhaul area. The goal was to facilitate production efficiency and reduce turn time with improvements touching on all aspects of the program, including test-cell upgrades, additional tooling and shop aids, and a reflow of the production floor layout.
A recent announcement by Bombardier Aerospace is causing a stir among Smart Parts customers. The company is going to begin charging state sales tax on all parts ordered through the hourly program; the tax is not included in the hourly program cost. The change will apply only to sales in those states that require vendors to charge tax. The exact number of states involved was not readily available but is believed to be fewer than 10.
