Singapore Changi Airport

A massive expansion of Changi International Airport will take place right next to the airshow site in Singapore. It includes a third runway and a fifth terminal, and will eventually double the hub’s capacity to 135 million passengers per year. The development forms part of a master plan that Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced last year.

ST Aerospace and Jetstar Asia have signed a three-year contract covering line maintenance of the carrier’s A320 fleet here at Changi Airport, supported by local base-maintenance facilities. A new narrowbody hangar can accommodate two A320s simultaneously and has increased ST Aerospace’s global hangar capacity to 38 widebody bays, 27 narrowbody bays and 24 general aviation bays.

The vibrant aerospace sector here in Singapore is perhaps best illustrated by the activities of Singapore Technologies Aerospace (ST Aerospace, Booth G01/L01). Last week, the company celebrated a $20 million revamp and expansion of its original home at Seletar with an official opening.

Singapore’s transport minister, Lui Tuck Yew, has called for Asian nations to liberalize air transport policies, and build connectivity and infrastructure in the region. He was speaking at the Aviation Leadership Summit, held on February 9 in Singapore.

Handling on average more than a million travelers a week and almost 1,000 aircraft movements a day, Singapore's Changi Airport is seeing record numbers of flights and passengers.

About 40 years after Singapore decided to build a new national airport at the former RAF Changi–initially anticipating requirements to accommodate 30 million passengers/year–the city state has seen a related decision also to reclaim land from the sea vindicated after traveller numbers reached 30 million in 2004, 40 million six years later and 50 million in 2012.

Jet Aviation Singapore is constructing a new hangar at Seletar Aerospace Park slated to be completed in early February next year. The new 100,900-sq-ft structure will triple the size of the current facility, and it will have two floors providing 43,700 sq ft of space for shops and offices. The new facility will also add 100,965 sq ft of apron area.

The new construction, which is alongside Jet Aviation Singapore’s current maintenance and FBO operation, will be unveiled at an opening celebration at the Singapore Airshow in February.

Signature Flight Support officially opened its new FBO at Singapore Changi International Airport on Sunday, just two months after announcing its newest Asian location at EBACE 2013. This location marks the second facility in Asia for Signature. (The company has also invested in the Hong Kong Business Aviation Centre at Chek Lap Kok/Hong Kong International Airport.)

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), working with the Changi Airport Group, has introduced a number of new procedures on June 19 to ensure safe operations at Singapore’s Changi International Airport (WSSS). The efforts are specific to operations during low-visibility conditions resulting from recent severe haze caused by fires set to clear land in Sumatra. An extra one or two miles of separation will be added between arrivals, and the airport will keep runway lights on during daytime operations.

It will provide “supervisory services” for ground handling and fuel coordination. The Changi location will be Signature’s second facility in Asia and join its investment in the Hong Kong Business Aviation Center at Chek Lap Kok/Hong Kong International Airport.

Its offices there will be located at the JetQuay CIP Terminal, which has lounge facilities. Signature will provide “supervisory services” for ground handling and fuel coordination at the Changi location, which will be Signature’s second facility in Asia after the Hong Kong Business Aviation Center at Chek Lap Kok/Hong Kong International Airport.
