As NBAA kicks off this year’s annual convention here in Las Vegas, preparations are well underway for next year’s Asian Business Conference and Exhibition (ABACE), to be held April 15-17 at the Shanghai Hawker Pacific Business Aviation Service Centre (SHPBASC), which has been its home since the show’s rebirth in 2011.

“This is a milestone in the history of business aviation,” said NBAA president Ed Bolen during yesterday’s press luncheon, which heralded the launch of ABACE 2013 in partnership with the Shanghai Airport Authority. “We’re delighted to be back in Shanghai,” He added, referring to the fact the first ABACE was held in Shanghai back in 2005. “With that initial show, we planted a seed,” Bolen said. “Thanks to a visionary number of leaders here in Shanghai and throughout the Chinese government, we’ve been able to see that seedling grow.”
ABACE show host Shanghai Hawker Pacific Business Aviation Service Center (SHPBASC) has been approved by China’s Civil Aviation Administration (CAAC) to perform maintenance on Bombardier’s Global 5000 and ultra-long-range Global Express/XRS series of business jets. Shanghai Hawker Pacific is the first approved Part 145 facility in China.
After an eventful 2011 that saw double-digit growth in passenger and aircraft numbers, Singapore is working to improve Changi Airport’s customer experience and global connections. “Despite continuing economic uncertainty and environmental factors, we continue to develop the hub,” according to Changi Airport Group (CAG) chief executive Lee Seow Hiang.
Asia Pacific-based airlines carried 190 million international passengers last year, a 3.5-percent increase from 2010, according to preliminary data released in late January by the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA). International passenger traffic (measured in revenue passenger kilometers) climbed 3.7 percent, while capacity growth for the year edged up by 6.3 percent. Since capacity outstripped traffic demand, the average international passenger load factor fell two percentage points to 76.4 percent.
Shanghai Hawker Pacific Business Aviation Service Centre, located at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, is reporting a 145-percent increase in business aviation traffic over the past 12 months.
Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China (Comac) has started building the final assembly line for the homegrown C919 passenger jet near Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport. The assembly line is set to be the biggest in China, according to Comac general manager Jin Zhuanglong. It will assemble, test and deliver the new ARJ21 and C919 airliners, as well as including component production and aircraft maintenance facilities.
Boeing, Shanghai Airport Authority and Shanghai Airlines have opened a new two-bay hangar at their joint venture, Boeing Shanghai Aviation Services. Located at Shanghai Pudong Airport, the new hangar is a major element of Boeing Shanghai’s plan to become a significant aviation services provider in China.
A private jet terminal at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport is scheduled to open ahead of the World Expo in May. Construction is now well under way, with the terminal structure already completed but not yet outfitted inside. The executive terminal will have security inspections, quarantine and customs separate from the other terminals at Hongqiao Airport.
The first business jet hub in China is expected to open this year at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport. Hongqiao Airport Business Aviation Center, a joint venture between the Shanghai airport authority and Hawker Pacific of Australia, will be able to handle as many as 6,000 aircraft movements a year. Meanwhile, Chinese officials continue to work on opening up China’s airspace to allow more private aircraft flights in the country.
