AgustaWestland has awarded its annual Cormorant Trophy for Helicopter Rescue to a Canadian Forces SAR team from Squadron 103 for their October 27, 2011 rescue of two walrus hunters who were stranded on an Arctic Sea ice flow near Nunavut. The trophy recognizes the “Canadian civilian, government or military crew that has performed the most demanding helicopter rescue of the year.” The mission required 18 hours of flying and multiple fuel stops in an AW101.

Milestone Aviation Group announced today that it signed a contract to purchase 19 more Sikorsky S-92s. This order is in addition to three S-92s purchased by the aircraft lessor in February, with the first two helicopters scheduled for delivery later this year. In total, the 22-aircraft order is valued at $682 million.

Eurocopter and helicopter support specialist Heli-One Norway have created Team Nordsar to bid in Norway’s competition for an all-weather search-and-rescue helicopter. The Nordsar version of the EC225 medium twin is touted as being well suited for missions in mountainous and coastal areas, as well as long-range operations in the Barents Sea. Eurocopter already has helicopters flying in SAR roles in the country.

But step a little closer and the gray isn’t uniform. In fact, the helicopter is covered with signatures by visitors all over the world who have viewed this unique S-92, which embarked on a nine-month Legacy of Heroes Tour back in October.

Becker Avionics has announced its new airborne BD46 beacon decoder, which it describes as “the most modern, lightweight, competitively priced 406 MHz beacon decoder on the market.”

According to the German manufacturer, the BD406 provides a unique tool for search and rescue (SAR) organizations on land, on water or in the air. It is a fixed installation or portable receiver developed specifically to decode and navigate to 406 MHz Cospas-Sarsat capable beacons (PLBs, SPLBs ELTs or EPIRBs) transmitting the 406 MHz signal with GPS information.

Eurocopter EC175

Eurocopter launched its new EC175 helicopter four years ago at the Heli-Expo show in Houston, Texas, showing a fuselage mockup of the new helicopter. Last month, AIN editor-in-chief Randy Padfield had the opportunity to fly one of the EC175 prototypes at Eurocopter’s main facility on Marseille-Provence Airport in France. AgustaWestland’s next-generation AW189 prototype made its first flight ahead of schedule yesterday at the Finmeccanica company’s plant in Cascina Costa, Italy. With chief test pilot Giuseppe Lo Coco at the controls, “it performed as expected” during a 45-minute sortie that also included an assessment of the helicopter’s general handling and basic systems.
