One can only speculate about whether or not Rupert Murdoch had any role in or opinion about the vigor with which his Wall Street Journal has launched into tabloid-style exposé of high-ranking executives’ personal use of corporate aircraft at companies other than his own now globally infamous News Corp.

German executive charter firm Triple Alpha Luftfahrt filed for insolvency on Friday and is now under the control of a court-appointed administrator. The Düsseldorf-based operator is a subsidiary of Ocean Sky Group Holdings, but according to chief executive Steve Grimes, the UK-based business aviation services company is trading normally and is unaffected by the bankruptcy.

Ocean Sky has its three new Spanish FBOs up and running in Ibiza, Menorca and Valencia and is planning to add more facilities in Spain. Meanwhile, the Italian element of the expansion plans it unveiled at the Ebace show in May has been delayed, but the company still hopes to open an FBO at an undisclosed airport in Italy next year.

Ocean Sky is accelerating its plans to become a major international business aviation services group with the acquisition of FBO groups in Spain and Italy. The UK-based company has just completed the takeover of Spain’s Aviation Handling Assistance (AHA) and has also signed a letter of intent to buy a controlling stake in Euroloa, an established FBO at Bologna, Italy.

Ocean Sky Aviation has appointed Steve Grimes as its new CEO. Grimes was formerly CEO of the UK-based group’s Ocean Sky Jet Centre FBO business, but will now run its main aircraft management and charter activities as well. Earlier this year, Ocean Sky received $48 million in fresh investment, and it recently acquired German charter operator Triple Alpha of Dusseldorf, Germany.

Ocean Sky Aviation plans to build a network of FBOs across Europe in the next 12 months. Ocean Sky currently has FBOs at London Luton Airport, Manchester and Prestwick in Scotland. Earlier this year, Ocean Sky received $48 million in fresh investment when it was acquired by German charter operator Triple Alpha of Dusseldorf, Germany.

Kurosh Tehranchian, CEO of UK-based Ocean Sky Aviation (Booth No. 1251), announced at EBACE that the company has received from its shareholders $48 million in additional funding, which the company plans to use to acquire other charter operators and FBOs, particularly in Europe.

Satcom Direct (Booth No. 683) now offers services via Inmarsat, Iridium and ViaSat (which provides a Ku-band broadband service called “Yonder” from leased satellite capacity, although it is planning to have its own satellites). The company’s relationship with ViaSat means it will compete with the Arinc SKYLink/Rockwell Collins exchange system, now installed in some 80 business aircraft.
