Crossair, Europe’s largest regional airline, spreads its wings next month when it formally takes over Swissair routes following the national carrier’s bankruptcy last year. The airline, to be known as Swiss, will fly to 123 destinations in 60 countries with a fleet of 128 aircraft. But André Dosé, the airline’s president and CEO, insisted that the regional roots of Crossair would form the foundation of Switzerland’s new national carrier.

Last week Saab received two orders from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration for equipment to upgrade the Swedish air force’s fleet of Gripen fighters. The first, worth around $54 million, covers the provision of electronic warfare systems, scheduled for delivery this year or next. The second, worth approximately $42 million, provides weapons pylons compatible with GPS-guided weapons. Deliveries are scheduled for 2009 to 2011.
Saab achieved the first flight of the Gripen Demo from the company’s Linköping airfield in Sweden on May 27. Crewed by test pilots Mikael Siedl and Magnus Ljungdahl, the flawless 30-minute flight marked the start of a three-year campaign, during which the fighter will demonstrate a wide range of new technologies destined for the Gripen Next Generation aircraft, as well as options for existing models.
On April 30, Saab achieved a significant milestone with the first flight of the Saab 2000 Erieye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, developed under Project Horizon for the Pakistan air force. The two-hour flight from Linköping, Sweden, was used to check out general handling and aircraft systems, and encountered no problems.

A push to entice corporate operators into considering pre-owned, non-airline derivatives of the Saab 340A and 340B, which are no longer in production, has been launched jointly by Sweden’s Saab Aircraft Leasing and FBO chain Piedmont Hawthorne of Winston-Salem, N.C.
Pan Am International Flight Academy (PAIFA) and Saab Aircraft of America signed an agreement to jointly develop maintenance training courses for North and South American operators of the Saab 340 twin turboprop. Courses, available on demand, will be held at the customer’s location or at PAIFA’s regional airline training centers located in Dulles, Va., and Minneapolis.

Swiss International Airlines (formerly Crossair) on May 28 took delivery of the final Embraer ERJ-145 of a firm order for 25, thus completing the first phase of a fleet-renewal program scheduled to introduce the first production 70-seat Embraer 170 next spring. Also the 600th Embraer regional jet delivered, the 50-seat jet flew from São José dos Campos, Brazil, to Basel, Switzerland, via Natal, Brazil, the Cap Verde Islands and Casablanca.
