All taxiways at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) once identified by a “Z” prefix have been eliminated as the City of Chicago continues toward the May 2, 2013 renaming of Runway 10-28. That runway will become 10L-28R in advance of this fall’s opening of the new Runway 10C-28C. ORD taxiways will now be identified with double letters such as “DD” or “GG.”

Xavion is the latest product from X-Plane simulator developer Austin Meyer’s Laminar Research. The company tested Xavion extensively on X-Plane and used the simulations to hone the program’s algorithms. A side benefit is that you can run Xavion on X-Plane to practice before trying it in a real airplane.
Israel’s Xsight has developed its new FODetect system to help airport managers keep runways clear during rainstorms or even in the middle of the night. Using a small swiveling radar transmitter and sensor unit installed near the runway’s edge, the FODetect beams sweeps the runway as often as every 30 seconds and, like traditional radar, highlights–both visually and aurally–objects as tiny as a rivet that may have fallen unnoticed from vehicles. The operator watching the FODetect screen will also see a high-resolution image of the object that caused the alarm.
An ATR 72 operated under the Alitalia network by Romanian carrier Carpatair was substantially damaged on February 2 when the crew lost control of the aircraft on landing at Rome Fiumicino Airport in Italy (LIRF). The wind at the time of the accident was approximately 90 degrees to Runway 16, gusting to 41 knots.
Four of the 50 people aboard were injured, two seriously.
The FAA’s Great Lakes region published a winter operations bulletin last week as a review of important winter airport operations. This stated that issuing a Notam to close a runway when snowplowing operations begin is an important priority.
Hilton Software has released Version 6.9 of the WingX Pro 7 iPad app. New features in the update include SmartTaxi, which highlights in red on the airport diagram the runway that a WingX user is on and nearby runways in yellow. SmartTaxi also displays runway identifiers and runway remaining in real time. The new search-and-rescue grids feature allows pilots to enter parameters for a search, and the app will generate and display a search pattern, or WingX can do this automatically for an optimal search pattern for a grid cell, according to Hilton Software.
Super Bowl XLVII this Sunday will generate specific aircraft arrival and departure procedures at New Orleans Lakefront (NEW) associated with the non-movement areas through Monday, according to NBAA Air Traffic Services. “These procedures are necessary due to the significant number of aircraft expected at NEW,” NBAA said. Specifically, there is a “highly detailed” metering plan for all departures from NEW starting at 9 a.m. CST on Saturday and ending at 10 p.m. CST on Monday.
In a new bid to reduce runway excursions, Eurocontrol published an action plan designed to help chip away at the annual rate of incidents, which ICAO says has not changed in 20 years. The plan is based on input from nearly every potential stakeholder, including airport operators, air navigation service providers, aircraft operators, aircraft manufacturers, professional associations and government safety authorities. Data was also gathered from more than 1,000 accident and incident reports from around the world.
The FAA has announced a number of taxiway changes at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). The changes, which became effective last week, rename taxiways “ZC” as “AA,” “ZD” as “L1,” “ZE” as “BB” and “ZF” as “CC.” Looking ahead, the FAA reminded users that on May 2 Runway 10-28 will be redesignated Runway 10L-28R as the City of Chicago prepares to open the airport’s new south Runway 10R-28L later this year.
Brunswick Executive Airport (BXM) in Maine is receiving a $25 million upgrade via the FAA’s Military Airport Program. Improvements include energy-efficient lighting systems for the single active runway (1R/19L), freshly painted markers and new signs to improve taxiing guidance for pilots. Construction has begun on 20 T hangars, and a segmented circle is also in the works. The airport has also acquired new snow removal equipment. Instrument approaches (ILS and GPS) and AWOS are now up and running. Meanwhile, some taxiways have been renamed to comply with current FAA standards.
