In an online forum, a professional pilot wondered whether he might be incorrectly controlling the aircraft when he performed a slip on final approach because the airspeed always increased, not decreased as he’d been taught. Slips in transport aircraft are sometimes restricted or even prohibited, making it hard for pilots to know how to handle them when they are required.
For many years, a small company named Lam Aviation has showcased its variable-geometry wing design at EAA AirVenture. Company founder Lawrence Lam (who passed away in 2010) even designed and built his own low-wing, retractable gear, single-engine airplane–the Wanderer–to demonstrate the concept and flew that airplane to Oshkosh three times.

The products, which include landing-gear levers with integral light plates and electronics, tiller modules, pilot LED checklists, flight control surface indicators, rudder trim switches and push-to-talk switches, will be moved to Ontic’s manufacturing facilities in Chatsworth, Calif., and Cheltenham, UK.

Rich Stowell, a master certified flight instructor and aerobatics teacher sometimes referred to as The Spin Doctor, is doing his part to address what he sees as a training gap that has the potential to lead to loss-of-control (LOC) issues. Stowell told AIN that, as an instructor, he recognizes the link between LOC issues in transport-category aircraft and the primary education being presented to both current and future generations of pilots.
The FAA is adopting a new Airworthiness Directive (FAA-2011-0518) for Airbus A300/310 airliners to prevent high loading of the vertical stabilizer caused by excessive rudder pedal inputs, which could cause failure of the vertical stabilizer and consequent loss of control. The AD, effective Dec. 14, 2012, applies to A300 B4-600, B4-600R, F4-600R and C4-605R Variant F airplanes (collectively called the A300-600 series), as well as to the A310 series.

The FAA has issued a notice of proposed rulemaking for an Airworthiness Directive for certain Embraer Phenom 300s. It is based on an unsafe condition as a result of an inadequate number of drain holes in the primary control surfaces (rudder, elevators and ailerons), which may allow water to accumulate in the control surfaces.
A new (March 21) airworthiness directive (AD) for the Cessna 560XL was prompted by reports of jammed or stiff rudder control due to water freezing on the rudder bias cables and pulleys in the tailcone. The directive requires modification of the drain installation of the tailcone stinger on the aft canted bulkhead, inspections for drain holes in the forward and aft frames, and modification of the drain holes.
