The new HeliSure systems introduced by Rockwell Collins aren’t just synthetic vision system (SVS) and terrain awareness and warning system (Taws) for helicopters but “a family of technologies that are going to provide solutions for helicopter cockpits,” according to Dan Toy, principal marketing manager for the company’s rotary wing business. The first products are HSVS and H-Taws and will be fitted to new AgustaWestland AW149s, AW189s, AW101s and AW169s.
Rockwell Collins president Kelly Ortberg has added the CEO title and was appointed to the company board’s executive committee. Ortberg succeeds Clay Jones, 64, who retired as CEO after nearly 34 years with the company. Jones will continue as non-executive chairman. Ortberg, who joined Rockwell Collins in 1987, became president in September. Previously, he served as executive vice president and COO of government systems. He also led the launch of the company’s Pro Line Fusion integrated avionics system.
Jeppesen signed an agreement with Rockwell Collins to automatically and securely transfer electronic charts via Wi-Fi and cellular networks using Rockwell Collins’s Ascend Aircraft Information Manager (AIM). Operators will be able to use AIM in Pro Line Fusion and Pro Line 21-equipped aircraft to streamline access to Jeppesen flight data, provided through an “enhanced direct connection to the flight deck of the aircraft.” This data includes Jeppesen e-charts, flight management system navigation, performance and V-speed databases and checklist files.
Rockwell Collins is offering customizable features for its Airshow 3-D moving map for the Apple iPad. “Now users can tailor their experience by adding company logos, customizing place names, selecting up to six languages and accessing high-resolution city maps,” said Greg Irmen, vice president and general manager of flight information solutions, cabin and electromechanical systems for Rockwell Collins. The new features are available through the Apple iTunes App store.
Bombardier’s new Challenger 350 will feature an upgraded flight deck, the Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 Advanced system, which will also be available as a retrofit on Challenger 300s. New capabilities include synthetic vision, Fans 1/A, ADS-B out, CPDLC, RNP basic and authorization required and LPV guidance. The Rockwell Collins MultiScan threat-detection system radar will also be available for both the Challenger 300 and 350. MultiScan reduces pilot workload by automatically identifying weather and turbulence.
Rockwell Collins (Hall 2B D108) is launching a family of products designed to give helicopter pilots better situational awareness when flying in congested and hazard-filled airspace. Called HeliSure, the family’s first two products, Helicopter Synthetic Vision System (H-SVS) and Helicopter Terrain Awareness and Warning System (H-Taws), have been selected by AgustaWestland for its AW149, AW189, AW101 and AW169 helicopters.
With the Paris Air Show as a backdrop, Rockwell Collins launched HeliSure, a line of situational awareness products for helicopters operating in increasingly congested and hazard-filled airspace. HeliSure delivers sensor data in real time through an intuitive user interface that features 3-D visualization.

Constant Aviation has completed the installation of Rockwell Collins’s Ascend informational management server on three Challenger 605s. “The aircraft came directly from the factory to our Cleveland facility for the installations.
By the end of June, Kelly Ortberg, currently president of Rockwell Collins, will transition into the CEO seat following the retirement of chairman and CEO Clay Jones. Ortberg, 52, has worked for Rockwell Collins (Chalet B19, Hall2b,Stand D108) for the past 26 years, including running both the commercial aviation and government businesses as COO.
Under a memorandum of agreement signed on June 4, Rockwell Collins and Avic subsidiary Beijing Bluesky Aviation Technology will form a joint venture to design, manufacture and market commercial flight simulators. The joint venture should begin operating by the end of the year, pending a final agreement and regulatory approvals. Products offered by the venture will serve training needs for regional, narrow- and widebody airliners in China and around the world, including training devices and full-flight simulators.
