Northern Ireland-based Denroy Plastics (Hall 1 Stand B16) has won a new contract to supply plastic components to the multi-national Eurofighter Typhoon program. The undisclosed contract adds further components to the ones already supplied by the company, which now provides 180 separate parts for the Typhoon. The contract announcement was accompanied by a visit from RAF Typhoon pilots to Denroy’s Balloo Road plant in Bangor.

Battelle has developed a robotic system to repair aircraft windows combining the company’s existing automated maintenance robot and a manual method of transparency restoration.

As a result of weathering and microfracturing, acrylic aircraft windows tend to craze within three to seven years, turning a clear surface into a milky, opaque one that can severely limit vision. The existing process of restoring windows to their original clarity requires technicians to hand buff out the scratches and crazing, a process that takes a significant amount of training, skill and time.

Ankara-based Turkish Aerospace Industries rolled out a new tactical medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) UAV last Friday. Named Anka, the UAV has been developed to answer the Turkish armed forces’ TIHA (tactical UAV) requirement, but is also to be offered for export.

As if fully autonomous UAV operations didn’t present enough of a challenge, Saab Aerosystems is developing one of its unmanned systems to operate at sea. The Skeldar M is a version of the company’s V-150 Skeldar (shield) rotary-wing UAV intended for operation from a variety of vessels. Work is progressing toward automatic deck landing trials in June 2008, followed by Swedish Navy tests later in the year.

Honeywell announced that its 13-inch-diameter, 12.5-pound surveillance aircraft has successfully completed its first untethered free flight at a test facility near Laguna, New Mexico. The ducted-fan micro air vehicle, developed as part of a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency advanced concept technology demonstration program, is designed to provide soldiers with improved situation awareness without exposing them to enemy fire.
