Delivery of a new SIGINT aircraft for the Royal Air Force has been postponed. The UK’s Military Airworthiness Authority (MAA) has not yet reviewed the safety case. The Airseeker (the RAF’s name for the U.S. Air Force RC-135 Rivet Joint system) is the latest airframe that could be delayed by the MAA’s detailed scrutiny, which British contractors have privately called overzealous.

Eclipse Aerospace received FAA approval for the extension of the service life of the Eclipse 500 and 550 to 20,000 hours/20,000 cycles with unlimited calendar life. According to the company, the life extension will provide the typical Eclipse Jet owner with more than 50 years of operation at typical usage rates, as well as improved airframe residual value.

The FAA adopted an airworthiness directive for Eurocopter Deutschland MBB-Kawasaki BK117C2 helicopters requiring inspection of the long tail-rotor drive shaft assembly for blind rivets. If any blind rivets are located, the shaft assembly must be replaced. The AD was prompted by the discovery that some helicopters have blind rivets installed in place of solid rivets, which could lead to failure of the tail rotor drive shaft and subsequent loss of control of the helicopter.

Cessna has begun manufacturing engineering test articles of the Citation Latitude and expects first flight in next year’s first quarter. “We’ve moved from engineering, analysis and modeling to cutting metal and driving rivets,” said Terry Shriner, business leader for the Latitude. “The team is always energized when we see an airplane begin to take shape for the first time.” These first airframes are being built using tooling intended for production, and the tooling and assembly procedures will be refined to prepare for line production, which begins next year.

Assembly work on the Mitsubishi Regional Jet officially began today with a ceremonial rivet-driving celebration at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ Tobishima plant, MHI and Mitsubishi Aircraft jointly announced today. MHI riveters began work on the frame structure of an MRJ90, driving rivets into an area surrounding the emergency escape hatch in the roof of the aircraft’s cockpit.

The UK’s Secretary of Defense, Bob Ainsworth, confirmed on March 22 that the Royal Air Force would receive three Boeing RC-135 Rivet Joint aircraft to provide its signals intelligence (Sigint) gathering capability, the final agreement having been reached on March 19. The announcement brought to an end any lingering speculation concerning the immediate future of RAF Sigint.

More than a year after U.S. defense officials offered three RC-135 Rivet Joint aircraft as a replacement for the same number of Royal Air Force BAE Nimrod R1 signals intelligence (SIGINT) aircraft, the UK Ministry of Defence has not made a decision.
