Singapore’s Black Knights aerobatic team has been reformed for the seventh time to wow the crowd at this year’s show. The six Lockheed Martin F-16Cs have been painted in a snazzy new red-and-white design. Led by Lt Col Joseph Leong, 44, a 26-year veteran of the Republic of Singapore Air Force, the team’s pilots are all experienced instructors with a minimum of 1,000 hours in the Fighting Falcon.

Goh Yong Kiat is a rare individual: a senior manager in the aerospace industry who is also an avid aviation enthusiast and historian. This home-grown talent has just published his fifth book, a pictorial history of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) entitled “Full Spectrum Force.”
Goh’s backlist includes histories of air logistics in the RSAF, and the history of Tengah airbase. But his major work was “Where Lions Fly,” a comprehensive history of aviation in Singapore, which was published in 2012 and is still available from Straits Times Press.
Airlines from Indonesia, Indian and Vietnam are expected to announce at least $17 billion worth of new aircraft orders at this week’s Singapore Airshow.
On the eve of the 2014 event, the Boeing sales force was working to nail down what is expected to be a contract for up to 50 of its new 737 Max models. The customer is expected to be an Indian operator, with Jet Airways, SpiceJet and Air India seen as the most likely buyers.
The 2014 Singapore Airshow opens at its purpose-built site on Tuesday, with an exhibitor base of more than 1,000 companies from over 50 countries set to show their wares, representing around a 10 percent increase on the last staging of the biennial event in 2012.
Singapore’s intention to upgrade its fleet of about 60 Lockheed Martin F-16C/D fighters was indicated by a recent notification to Congress by the Pentagon. But no choice has yet been made between rival upgrade systems integrators BAE Systems and Lockheed Martin. According to the notification, the upgrade will cost Singapore an estimated $2.43 billion, although this total also includes three new weapons.
Almost three months on from the crash of a pre-series aircraft in Italy on May 11, Alenia Aermacchi’s M346 jet remains grounded as investigations into the causes of the accident continue. The Italian manufacturer has insisted there are no similarities between this incident and the November 2011 accident in which a prototype M346 crashed off the coast of Dubai after appearing in the airshow there.

The new trainer would be a further development of the company’s M-311 design, with entry into service between 2017 and 2020.

Since the first quarter of 2012 two Aermacchi M346s have been flying under Italian air force colors, carrying out the initial operational test and evaluation (IOT&E) campaign. From March 5 to Sept. 5, 2012 the two Masters logged some 130 flight hours in the hands of the Reparto Sperimentale Volo (test flight wing) of Pratica di Mare.
Singapore state-owned ST Aerospace, known for its MRO operation and its passenger-to-freighter conversions, also runs a small business jet charter operation. Subsidiary Pacific Flight Services (PFS) operates from Singapore, although its four jets are registered in Australia.
