At about 11:30 a.m. today a Merlin SA226T registered to Maci Leasing of Edison, N.J., crashed at Teterboro Airport, N.J. The twin turboprop came to rest at the south end of Runway 1 facing south. A fire ignited but it was extinguished within 15 minutes, according to officials. The pilot, the only person aboard, was taken to a nearby hospital with undisclosed injuries. He was described as being in “fair condition” by a hospital spokeswoman.
A Falcon 900 ran off Runway 25 while departing from California’s Santa Barbara Airport at 2:15 p.m. on June 10. According to an airport authority statement, Falcon N914DD “experienced a malfunction” that caused the pilots to abort the takeoff. “The pilot applied the brakes 1,600 feet before reaching the runway end, with the aircraft coming to rest about 400 feet beyond the runway.” None of the 13 passengers or two pilots was injured.
Swearingen SA-226T, Wheeling, Ill., April 11, 2007–N125WG was substantially damaged during an aborted takeoff at Chicago Executive Airport. The ATP-rated pilot said he felt a “surge” from the left engine as he reached 75 knots on the takeoff roll. The surge continued and he could not maintain directional control. He pulled back the power and aborted the takeoff.
Bird residue was found in the left engine of the Sabreliner that crashed during an aborted takeoff May 9 from Brownwood Regional Airport, Texas, according to the NTSB’s recently released factual report. After the airplane reached V1 the crew and passengers heard a “loud bang” after which the airplane swerved to the left.
Luckily for my passengers, aircraft and me, the only times I’ve experienced a runway excursion have been during training. On each occasion, the results were predictable, even in the most sophisticated aircraft simulator. A loss of directional control sends the aircraft sliding across shamrock-green video scenery and careening harmlessly through runway lights and signs, trees and anything else in the way.
Cessna Citation 550 Bravo, Bethany, Okla., May 20, 2002–Citation N13VP was substantially damaged when it hit a perimeter fence and road during a runway overrun after an aborted takeoff at the Wiley Post Airport. The ATP-rated pilot and four passengers were not injured. One passenger sustained minor injuries. VMC prevailed and an IFR flight plan was filed for the Part 91 business flight.
On Monday the NTSB posted its preliminary report on the June 3 accident involving Dornier 328JET N328PD. The aircraft, operated under Part 91 by East Coast Flight Services, was substantially damaged during a runway overrun, following an aborted takeoff from Runway 34R at Manassas Regional Airport, Va.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey authorized the installation of an engineered materials arresting system (EMAS) at the departure end of Runway 6 at Teterboro (N.J.) Airport (TEB) by the end of next year. The project was originally scheduled for completion in mid-2007.
Beech King Air 200, Green Bay, Wis., June 30, 2004–The accident was caused by the loss of engine power for an undetermined reason and the pilot’s premature retraction of the landing gear after takeoff, said the Safety Board.
